Getting around Dubai via public transport mostly involves the metro, buses, and trams—and the best part is they all use the exact same transit card (the nol card)! In this article, we’ve put together a detailed guide covering all the different types of nol cards, ticket prices, fare zones, how to top up, refund policies, and tips for your rides. We’ve also included a breakdown of taxi and ride-hailing (Uber) fares and things to look out for. We hope this handy guide helps you smoothly plan out your Dubai adventure!

🚊 Metro
★ Types of Transit Cards (nol card)
If you want to take the metro or buses in Dubai, you absolutely need to familiarize yourself with this universal transit card. For tourists, the most suitable universal nol cards for the metro and buses are divided into three types: Red, Silver, and Gold:
- Red Ticket: AED 2 paper card. It's not a reloadable wallet; you can only load it with up to 10 single trips, making it perfect for short-term visitors!
- Silver Card: AED 25 (includes AED 19 of usable credit) and can be topped up to a maximum of AED 5,000. It can be reloaded an unlimited number of times, making it our top pick for tourists.
- Gold Card: AED 25 (includes AED 19 of usable credit), same as the Silver Card. Holding a Gold Card grants you access to the luxurious Gold Class cabins, but keep in mind the fares are twice as much as the Silver Card.

★ Metro Map & Fare Zones

The Dubai Metro system is incredibly clear and easy to navigate, consisting of just two main lines: the Red Line and the Green Line. You can check out the route map above!
Dubai's public transport (including metro and bus routes) is divided into 7 zones. You can find the official map here. Fares are calculated based on how many zones you cross between your departure and arrival stations. Below is a quick breakdown of the fares for the Silver, Red, and Gold cards that tourists use most:
| Zones | Silver Card | Red Ticket | Gold Card |
|---|---|---|---|
| Within 1 Zone | AED 3 | AED 4 | AED 6 |
| 2 Adjacent Zones | AED 5 | AED 6 | AED 10 |
| More than 2 Zones | AED 7.5 | AED 8.5 | AED 15 |
📌 For the latest fare information and schedules, please refer to the official RTA website

★ Silver Card Top-up & Refunds
When your Silver Card balance drops to AED 5, you must top it up before you can use it again. If you have leftover credit before heading home, you can actually get a refund at the ticket counters! For instance, if your balance is AED 10, you'll receive a refund of AED 5 (the remaining AED 5 is kept as an administrative fee for the card). The card itself is valid for 5 years, so if you plan to return to Dubai within that time, you can definitely hold onto it and use it again! (Information as of 2019)
★ How to Ride & Use Your nol Card
For the metro, simply tap your card at the gates when entering and exiting. For buses, you must tap when you board and when you alight. Trams also require tapping in and out, but unlike the metro, tram stations don't have physical barrier gates. You need to proactively find the card readers on the platform to tap before you board! If you are caught riding without tapping, you will be hit with a hefty fine. Tapping before boarding shows your current balance, and tapping upon exiting will display the cost of your trip alongside your remaining balance.

When taking the metro, please note that if you haven't purchased a Gold Card, you cannot enter the Gold Class cabins (there are clear markings on the platform floor). Additionally, Dubai Metro has dedicated cabins for Women and Children only—gentlemen, be careful not to wander into the wrong carriage!
★ Taking the Metro to the Airport
If you plan to take the metro to or from the airport, look closely at the platform markings—they indicate which train cars have designated luggage storage areas. The Dubai Metro can get quite crowded, so finding a car with proper luggage space will make your airport commute so much smoother!

🚌 Dubai Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus
While we relied on the metro for almost our entire trip, Cherry personally highly recommends the Dubai Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus, especially for those on a tight schedule. Firstly, many Dubai metro stations aren't right next to the major attractions, often requiring a 10-15 minute walk in the heat after exiting the station. In contrast, these buses aren't restricted by rails and stop right by the sights. Secondly, navigating via metro to certain attractions requires changing lines, which eats up a ton of precious vacation time. The most time-consuming of all is getting to Atlantis! If you're heading there, check out our 👉🏻Atlantis Transport Guide
The Hop-On Hop-Off bus features two main routes: the Red Route for City Tours (Red Route Map) and the Blue Route for Beach/Marina Tours (Blue Route Map). Together, they cover almost every attraction worth visiting in Dubai! The buses also provide pre-recorded audio guides available in 12 different languages. They offer 24-hour, 48-hour, and 5-day passes, which come bundled with free admission tickets to various attractions. Honestly, once you deduct the value of those included attraction tickets, the sightseeing bus is a fantastic bargain!

🚖 Taxis & Uber
★ Pricing
The taxi meter starts at AED 5 during the day or AED 5.5 at night. For short distances, taxis are noticeably cheaper than Uber. We're not sure if it was just because we were staying in downtown, but almost all the Ubers available in Dubai were luxury vehicles! If you fancy rolling up in a Lexus, Mercedes, or BMW, Uber is a great choice—though naturally, the fares will be a bit steeper than regular taxis. Also, keep in mind that while some taxis accept credit cards, others don't (as of Jan 2019). If you plan to pay with plastic, be sure to ask the driver before getting in to avoid any awkward moments later!
★ Do You Need to Tip?
Tipping etiquette seems to be heavily debated; some say yes, some say no. While we were in Dubai, we assumed tips were only expected at hotels and not by drivers. However, we encountered a taxi driver who simply didn't hand back our change. Cherry waited a few seconds, realized the driver wasn't going to give it, and just quietly stepped out. We later discovered that local Dubai residents generally do tip their taxi and Uber drivers! The standard tip is around AED 5 to 10, or simply letting them "keep the change."
★ Things to Note
Another crucial thing to remember is that during the peak winter tourist season (especially since we went over the Christmas holidays), you often have to line up for taxis at popular attractions. This is especially true at the Dubai Mall, where we found ourselves waiting for at least half an hour every time! Make sure to factor in this potential waiting time when planning out your itinerary.
🚊 Atlantis Monorail
Besides the metro, buses, and trams, there's also a dedicated Monorail 🚊 that heads out to Atlantis, making stops along the Palm Jumeirah. This monorail is privately operated and independent of the official public transport network, which means your nol card will not work here—you'll need to purchase a separate ticket. 🚍 Getting from Dubai to Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is only about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Dubai, and we absolutely, highly recommend making the trip! The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, in particular, is breathtakingly magnificent. And the best part? You can actually use your nol card on the intercity buses to Abu Dhabi! Just make sure your card has enough balance, and tap in and out as usual. For all the juicy details about bus stations, routes, platforms, and the scenic views along the way, we've got you covered right here 👉🏻Dubai to Abu Dhabi Transport Guide ☆ A Must-Read for Your Trip
