★ Phu Quoc Visa Exemption

As Vietnam's premier vacation paradise, the government has introduced a special policy: All travelers holding foreign passports enjoy a 30-day visa exemption when visiting Phu Quoc! To qualify for this exemption, you must meet the following requirements:

◆ Your passport must have at least six months of validity left.
◆ You must fly directly into Phu Quoc International Airport from an international destination.
◆ The destination of your departing flight from Phu Quoc cannot be elsewhere in Vietnam.
◆ You must leave the island within the 30-day exemption period (proof of a return/onward ticket is required).
◆ You must not have been previously deported from Vietnam or have a criminal record there.
◆ Your purpose of visit must be tourism, arriving by air or sea.

As long as you meet these criteria, you can enjoy a 30-day visa-free stay regardless of your passport. Keep in mind that this exemption applies only to Phu Quoc. If you plan to visit other parts of Vietnam, you must apply for a Vietnam E-Visa in advance. The official standard processing time for an E-Visa is 3 working days (excluding weekends, Vietnamese public holidays, and the day of submission), but for peace of mind, we highly recommend applying a week or two early just in case. For more details or the latest updates, check out this website.

★ Phu Quoc Direct Flight Info

Because Phu Quoc is the only visa-free region in Vietnam, taking a direct flight is usually necessary to take advantage of the exemption. Whether you are flying out of Taiwan or Hong Kong, make absolutely sure your ticket is "direct" and not a transit flight when booking. Here are the airlines currently offering direct flights to Phu Quoc (always check official sources for the latest schedules):
◆ Taiwan: VietJet Air, STARLUX Airlines, and Tigerair Taiwan (during specific seasons)
◆ Hong Kong: HK Express, VietJet Air, Greater Bay Airlines

★ Phu Quoc SIM Cards

We highly recommend purchasing a Vietnam eSIM online before your trip. Once you touch down in Phu Quoc, you won't need to fiddle with a physical SIM card—you can connect to the internet instantly to book a Grab or use navigation. It's truly the most convenient and fastest option!

★ Time Difference

There is a slight time difference to keep in mind. Vietnam is GMT+7, which means it is one hour behind Taiwan and Hong Kong. So, when it's 10:00 AM in Taipei or Hong Kong, it's 9:00 AM in Vietnam.

★ Voltage and Plug Types

◆ Voltage: 220V
◆ Plug Type: Vietnam uses standard Type A / C / F

★ Exchanging Currency in Phu Quoc

Before your trip, you might wonder: is it better to bring local currency or US Dollars to exchange? Generally, bringing your home currency (like NTD or HKD) directly to Phu Quoc is both convenient and cost-effective. You can exchange cash at the airport or at jewelry shops in town, saving you the hassle and double-conversion loss of buying USD first. Upon landing, exchange just a little bit of Vietnamese Dong (VND)—roughly the equivalent of $30–$50 USD—for immediate use. Later, head to the Duong Dong Night Market area to find better exchange rates. It's always a good idea to compare a few shops.

If you already have US Dollars lying around at home, definitely bring them! But if you don't, there's no need to make a special trip to the bank to get them. For USD, large denomination bills usually get a better exchange rate than smaller ones. Keep your $1 and $5 bills handy for tipping or for use in some high-end hotels and large malls. Most local street stalls and restaurants still primarily deal in Vietnamese Dong, so USD isn't as widely accepted for everyday small purchases.

LocationProsConsBest For
AirportMost convenient, available immediately upon arrivalPoorer exchange ratesEmergencies, exchanging small amounts for transport or tips
Town Jewelry ShopsBest exchange ratesSlightly higher riskLarge currency exchanges. Recommended around Duong Dong Night Market
HotelsGreat service, exchange right where you stayPoorer exchange ratesEmergency backup, useful when jewelry shops are closed or you need a small amount quickly

★ Tipping Culture in Phu Quoc

Tipping in Vietnam is entirely a personal choice. It is not mandatory, and you should base it entirely on how you feel about the service provided. We suggest keeping a few 10,000 or 20,000 VND bills (about $0.50–$1 USD) on hand, which are perfect for tipping!

PlaceTipping Custom
RestaurantsNo tip expected at small local eateries or street food stalls. At mid-range restaurants, a small tip (10,000–20,000 VND) is appreciated for good service. At high-end restaurants, if a service charge isn't included in the bill, 5%–10% is customary.
Grab / TaxisRide-sharing and taxi drivers don't expect tips. If you wish, simply rounding up the fare is a nice gesture.
Hotels20,000–50,000 VND ($1–$2 USD) for the bellboy carrying your luggage. The same amount applies for daily housekeeping (left on the bed).
Tour GuidesDepending on the service quality, 100,000–200,000 VND ($4–$8 USD) per day is a reasonable range.
Massages50,000–100,000 VND ($2–$4 USD) or about 20% of the total cost, depending entirely on your satisfaction.

Note: Especially at upscale venues, always check your bill to see if a service charge has already been included. If it has, there's no need to tip extra. Again, tipping in Vietnam is not forced. Do it when you feel you've received wonderful service and want to express gratitude, not because you feel pressured!

★ Phu Quoc Weather

Phu Quoc's rainy season runs from May to October. Temperature-wise, it remains warm year-round, with highs around 30°C (86°F) and lows around 24°C (75°F). If you're visiting during the rainy season, we highly recommend booking a resort with a private beach, or visiting the beaches on the "East Coast," such as Sao Beach or Khem Beach. Check out the chart below for monthly average temperatures and rainfall to help you plan your trip!

★ Safety in Phu Quoc

As a major island destination, Phu Quoc's overall security is fantastic, making it one of the safest tourist spots in Vietnam. The vast majority of travelers enjoy a safe, relaxing experience here. However, to ensure your trip goes flawlessly, keep these common risk factors in mind:

Risk TypeWhere/When it HappensPrevention Tips
Drive-by SnatchingLess frequent than in big cities, but still possible near night markets or walking/riding along main roads. A motorcyclist might grab your bag or phone.Always wear crossbody bags in front of you. Don't stare at your phone while walking near roads. Keep valuables in inner pockets if possible.
PickpocketsCrowded places like the Phu Quoc Night Market.Stay alert at all times and don't flash your cash.
TaxisDishonest drivers taking long routes or quoting crazy prices.Ensure the driver turns on the meter, or better yet, use Grab.
Scams/DisputesWhen renting scooters or exchanging currency on the street. If renting a scooter, take a video and photos of the entire bike with the shop owner present before driving off to avoid false damage claims. Only exchange currency at proper jewelry stores or banks.

Honestly, the biggest "risk" in Phu Quoc comes from the chaotic traffic and sheer number of motorbikes, rather than crime. We strongly advise against renting a scooter if you aren't used to Southeast Asian driving styles. Prioritize using Grab or a private charter. All in all, Phu Quoc is an incredibly relaxing island. Just maintain basic situational awareness—especially with your phone in crowded night markets or by the road—and you'll have an amazing, safe vacation!

🇻🇳 Top 20 Attractions in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc, Vietnam has exploded as a wildly popular travel destination in recent years! With massive theme parks, aquariums, safaris, cross-sea cable cars, water parks, and places like Grand World and Sunset Town that will make you feel like you've teleported to Europe—it truly has it all! Add in the island's pleasant climate, stunning beaches, and affordable prices, and it's easy to see why it's become one of Southeast Asia's highest-value island escapes. If you're planning a trip to Vietnam, you absolutely cannot miss this stunning destination. Let's dive in and explore every incredible attraction in Phu Quoc from north to south!

★ Starfish Beach

📍 Starfish Beach Phu Quoc|Map Link

Starfish Beach is located in Rạch Vẹm village in northern Phu Quoc. It's a slightly remote, rustic fishing village beach. With an abundance of starfish dotting the crystal-clear water, it has suddenly blown up as an incredibly popular Instagram spot! The photos you can take here are breathtaking, but keep in mind that starfish spotting is seasonal. The dry season (November to April) is the best time to visit; the water is calm and clear, and the starfish gather in the shallows. We don't recommend going during the rainy season (May to October), as the waves are rough, it rains heavily, the roads get incredibly muddy, and the murky water makes finding starfish difficult. Even in the dry season, the number of starfish depends on daily tides, weather, and currents, so we can't guarantee you'll see a massive amount. If you want to take photos with the starfish, remember: do not touch them! Lifting them out of the water even for a few seconds can cause them to suffocate and die. You can still get gorgeous shots without touching them! Also, while tourism is booming on the island, the road to Starfish Beach is still quite rugged and unpaved in sections. We definitely recommend hiring a private charter or taking a Grab/taxi for a more comfortable ride.

★ Floating Restaurant Khanh Hao

📍 Nhà Bè Khánh Hào|Map Link

This spot was introduced to us by a local! The authentic Floating Restaurant Khanh Hao sits in a small, untouched village filled with genuine local Phu Quoc charm. Because it remains undeveloped, the environment is exceptionally serene and beautiful. With its long wooden dock, a few drifting boats, and surrounding mountain views, the tranquility here is truly beyond words.

Beyond outdoor thrills like roller coasters, carousels, and pirate ships, there is also a giant turtle-shaped aquarium to explore! ★ Phu Quoc Bee Farm

📍 Phu Quoc Bee Farm|Map Link

Located in northern Phu Quoc, the Bee Farm is a true "hidden gem" that most tour groups skip! This family-run farm is cozy and adorable, and the owners are incredibly passionate about their bees. Here, you can witness the honey harvesting process firsthand, learn about the habits and environments of bees, and appreciate the wonders of nature while seeing how honey is refined. There's also a quaint restaurant serving food made with farm-fresh ingredients—and, of course, delicious honey! Because it's a small family business, major travel agencies won't bring you here, so grab a taxi or private charter if you want to visit!

★ Ong Lang Beach

📍 Ong Lang Beach Photo from Internet

Phu Quoc actually has many public beaches, and Ong Lang is the only one Cherry has personally visited. The ocean views are quite pretty, but unfortunately, there was a fair amount of trash on the sand when we went. We didn't stay too long—just snapped a few photos and headed out. Reading recent Google reviews, some say this beach has been bought out by resorts and is no longer open to the public. If you really want to enjoy a pristine beach in Phu Quoc, we highly recommend staying at a resort with a private beach, as they have dedicated staff cleaning the sand daily! If your accommodation doesn't have a private beach, taking the cable car to Sun World Nature Park offers a very clean and beautiful beach alternative.

The island is primarily affected by the Northeast and Southwest monsoons, meaning ocean debris gets washed onto different shores depending on the season. Beach cleanliness, waves, and water clarity change throughout the year, so keep this in mind when planning!

★ Phu Quoc Night Market

📍 Phu Quoc Night Market|Map Link

Phu Quoc is home to a famous Night Market, located right in Duong Dong town (hence sometimes called Duong Dong Night Market). Once the sun sets, the vibrant lights sparkle under the starry sky, and the huge array of local snacks, specialties, and island-essential coconuts is dazzling! The biggest draw, however, is the seafood. Alongside the street food stalls, you'll find plenty of open-air seafood restaurants where everything is cooked to order—much like Taiwanese stir-fry joints. The prices are far more friendly than inside the resorts, making it the perfect place to feast on fresh local catches! Of course, the night market is also packed with souvenirs, including various accessories made from locally harvested pearls. It's fantastic for both eating and shopping, drawing huge crowds every single night. You definitely cannot skip this!

Dinh Cau Temple (also known as the Rock Temple) is situated on a small rocky outcropping right next to the harbor, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Next to the temple stands a striking blue-and-white lighthouse that guides local fishermen home. This shrine is where fishermen come to pray for safe sea voyages. Because it faces west, it is also a phenomenal spot to watch the sunset! Every evening, tourists gather here waiting for that breathtaking moment when the sun dips below the horizon. The best part? Dinh Cau Temple is super close to downtown and the night market. Watching the sunset and then immediately heading over to feast at the night market is the absolute perfect combo!

★ Pepper Farm

Are there many of you who, like Cherry, have eaten pepper your whole life but have never actually seen a pepper tree? Honestly, I didn't even know pepper grew on trees! 😅 Since Phu Quoc is world-renowned for producing high-quality pepper, you absolutely must make time to stroll through a pepper farm and see the real deal. The tall, straight vines of pepper plants lined up neatly in rows are surprisingly therapeutic and make for great photos! If you're on the island, do not miss the unique experience of a Pepper Farm!

It's a great spot to schedule a rest and lunch break between visiting other attractions, while soaking in the authentic daily life and culture of the locals!

★ Phung Hung Fish Sauce Factory

📍 Phung Hung Fish Sauce|Map Link Fish sauce is an indispensable seasoning in Vietnamese cuisine! Aside from being a top tourist destination, Phu Quoc's rich marine life makes it Vietnam's premier fish sauce producer, meaning it's a must-buy souvenir. At this Fish Sauce Factory in southern Phu Quoc, you can witness the traditional fermentation process. Their brand is incredibly famous—even the hotel staff we met told us they ship several boxes of this exact brand back to their parents every year! Fair warning: the pungent, distinct smell of fermenting fish sauce inside the factory is very strong, so mentally prepare yourself before entering. This spot is right across from the Coconut Prison, making it easy to pop in, check it off the list, and grab some authentic souvenirs!

★ Coconut Prison

📍 Phu Quoc Prison History Museum|Map Link

Amidst the breathtaking scenery of Phu Quoc lies a heavy piece of history. Built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Coconut Prison was used by the French colonial puppet government to detain political prisoners and resistance fighters. Prisoners of war suffered cruel abuse and inhumane confinement here. One of the most notorious tortures involved locking people in tiny "tiger cages" made of barbed wire, leaving them to roast under the blazing sun, sometimes with a fire lit nearby for added torment. The museum vividly reconstructs various tortures endured by the inmates, evoking deep sorrow and anger for those who suffered unjustly, and giving the grounds an eerie, heavy atmosphere. Visiting Coconut Prison offers a profound understanding of Vietnam's history. While somber, if you have the time, it's worth visiting to learn about this dark chapter. (Note: Not recommended for the faint of heart or young children.)

If you love Vietnamese food, try TEMPUS FUGIT, the resort's all-day dining venue themed as the architecture department. ★ Sunset Town

Sunset Town spans a massive area with endless spots to explore and photograph! Beyond replicas of European landmarks like the Roman Colosseum, Pompeii ruins, St. Mark's Campanile, and the Arc de Triomphe, there is the "Dragon Staircase" (strikingly similar to Lombard Street in San Francisco) and a lively town night market where you can enjoy local food. The most famous spot at sunset is the "Kiss Bridge." The two ends of the bridge come incredibly close but never touch, and visitors love walking to the edge to snap iconic kissing silhouettes! If you want to capture the "lips" of the Kiss Bridge aligning perfectly with the setting sun, make sure you walk on the bridge's "lower walkway"! The station for the world's longest cross-sea cable car is also right here in Sunset Town. If you're short on time in Phu Quoc, we highly recommend combining Sunset Town with the Cable Car 👇🏻 for a perfect half-day!

The turquoise bays, underwater coral reefs, and stunning fleets of fishing boats will leave you absolutely speechless! This was hands-down our favorite experience in Phu Quoc. The water park, however, is spectacular, featuring over 16 different water slides, a lazy river, a wave pool, and more. Dining options include great buffet spreads offering Vietnamese, Chinese, and Western cuisine, ensuring everyone finds something they like! The Kiss Bridge is fantastic for sunset walks, and the Kiss of the Sea show is brilliant. Additionally, the island's beach is incredibly clean and beautiful; if your hotel doesn't have a private beach, we highly recommend relaxing here! 🇻🇳 Itinerary Guide

How many days should you spend in Phu Quoc? Cherry personally thinks you need at least three full days (4 days, 3 nights) to hit all the main spots. If you're traveling with family or prefer a relaxed, leisurely pace, we highly recommend four full days (5 days, 4 nights). Below is an easy-going 4-full-day itinerary guide for your reference!

Water activities depart from An Thoi Port in the south. The popular Coral Reefs & Half-Moon Reef Snorkeling Day Tour is a half-day trip, available morning (7:30 AM) or afternoon (12:30 PM). If you opt for Sea Walking, it runs from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Keep these times in mind when scheduling your southern island days!
