★ Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
◆ Opening Hours: Saturday - Thursday 9am-10pm | Friday 9am-12pm & 3pm-10pm
◆ Location: Al Rawdah - Abu Dhabi | Map Link
◆ Tickets: Free | But requires advance booking

If you can only pick one spot to visit in Abu Dhabi, it absolutely has to be the $5.5 billion Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which used 46 tons of gold just for its construction! With 82 domes and four 107-meter-tall minarets, the gleaming white floral marble floors in the courtyard that literally reflect the sun, majestic domes, and intricate colorful archways will leave you breathless. It feels exactly like stepping into a mesmerizing Islamic dream~ Inside, you'll be greeted by gigantic Swarovski crystal chandeliers and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet made from 35 tons of wool. This massive 5,627-square-meter carpet took 1,200 to 1,300 artisans two whole years to complete!

When visiting the grand mosque, pay close attention to the dress code. Women must be covered from head to toe, including hair, wrists, and ankles, and clothes cannot be tight or transparent. Men can wear short sleeves and long pants (no sleeveless shirts or shorts). In the past, women could borrow traditional abayas for free if their outfits didn't meet the rules, but unfortunately, they no longer provide abaya rentals. If your outfit isn't compliant, you'll have to buy or rent an abaya at the nearby Souq Al Jami mall before entering, with prices starting around 40 to 50 AED. To save both time and money, we highly recommend bringing your own compliant clothing! Also, the mosque is closed to tourists from 12pm-3pm on Fridays for Islamic activities, so we suggest avoiding Friday afternoons. For more details on visiting, check out our guide 👉🏻 Must-Visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
★ Qasr Al Watan (Presidential Palace)
◆ Opening Hours: Daily 11am-6:30pm | Check official website
◆ Location: Al Ras Al Akhdar - Abu Dhabi | Map Link
◆ Tickets: Official Website | Klook | KKday | Included in Attractions Pass

If you're into Arabian architecture, besides the Grand Mosque, you absolutely cannot miss "Qasr Al Watan" (Abu Dhabi Presidential Palace), which officially opened to the public in 2019! It is indeed part of the UAE's real Presidential Palace complex. Taking 63 months to build and spanning 150 hectares, it's not an ancient monument. Being a recent build, it perfectly blends traditional Arabian styles with modern elements, showcasing the UAE's pursuit of modernization while deeply respecting its traditions. The elegant domes and arches scream "gorgeous Arabian palace" right out of our childhood imaginations! Inside, the spectacular crystal chandeliers, exquisite vaults, and incredibly detailed decor are jaw-dropping. It also hosts exhibitions detailing the UAE's traditions, politics, and social structure, letting you see how this small desert nation evolved into today's prosperous country!
Whether you love Arabian architecture, want to take amazing photos, or are curious about UAE history and culture, this palace, oozing with royal elegance inside and out, is highly recommended!
Besides exploring the interior, you can also take a speedboat tour to see the Abu Dhabi skyline from the water, taking in both the Presidential Palace and Etihad Towers at once. Check it out if you're interested!
★ Emirates Palace

You cannot visit Abu Dhabi without seeing the ultra-luxurious Emirates Palace, an Arabian-style hotel built with 22 tons of gold and an eye-watering $3 billion! Sitting on a vast sandy beach, its architecture fuses traditional Arabian elements with modern luxury. Its glittering domes and impressive marble halls radiate a unique royal elegance. It truly deserves its title as the "world's only 8-star hotel"! It's the epitome of Abu Dhabi luxury—whether you want to experience lavish accommodation, taste fine dining, or immerse yourself in Arabian culture, it offers an unparalleled experience.

A special shoutout goes to the Episodes Cafe inside the palace. Their signature "Episodes Gold Cappuccino" (check their Menu for current prices) is an absolute must-do for visitors looking for that perfect Instagram shot! The delicate foam is decorated with an Arabian palace design and an overflowing amount of gold leaf—it's so cute! Besides the famous cappuccino, Episodes offers plenty of other meals too. Since it's close to Qasr Al Watan and Etihad Towers, it's a great spot to rest and grab a bite before heading to your next stop!
◆ Episodes Opening Hours: Daily 9:00am-11pm

★ Etihad Towers

Etihad Towers is a spectacular complex of five towers (the five on the left in the photo above) located right opposite Emirates Palace, making it super easy to visit both on the same day. Walking out of the palace, you'll see the towers and the UAE flag fluttering in the wind. These five towers look like a massive, translucent modern art installation shining brilliantly in the sun! They symbolize Abu Dhabi's modernization and luxury. The design is inspired by traditional Arabian geometric patterns fused with modern sleekness—just looking at the exterior offers endless photo opportunities!

On the 74th floor of Tower 2, there's an observation deck 👉🏻 Observation Deck at 300, where you can overlook the stunning city skyline from 300 meters high. It also features a cafe serving light snacks and afternoon tea~
◆ Opening Hours: Daily 9:30am-8pm | Map Link
◆ Tickets: Official Website | Klook | Included in Attractions Pass
◆ Official Website: www.etihadtowers.ae
Just to clarify the pricing: the official ticket is 95 AED/person, but 55 AED of that is a voucher you can spend on food and drinks that same day. Klook also has options with or without light snacks, so pick whatever fits your needs! While Cherry personally feels the views from Dubai's observation decks might be a bit more extravagant, this one gives you a fantastic close-up look at Emirates Palace. After deducting the food voucher, the 40 AED entry fee is very reasonable. It feels like you're buying a view and getting an afternoon tea thrown in! If you're running around Abu Dhabi and need a place to eat and rest, this is a fantastic choice!

The Louvre Abu Dhabi's architecture is a stunning piece of art in itself! It looks like a giant silver umbrella floating on water. The multi-layered, web-like dome allows sunlight to filter through, creating a mesmerizing "rain of light" effect that makes you feel like you've walked straight into a dream! Designed by renowned architect Jean Nouvel and costing €600 million, this structure perfectly captures the feeling of "sunlight passing through date palm leaves in an oasis." Paired with the beautiful water features around it, the vibe is incredibly relaxing~ You can even book a kayaking experience to explore the museum from a super cool different angle (check the official website if interested).

Inside, the museum boasts a rich collection of treasures from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary art, covering a wealth of global history and culture. Whether you're into ancient civilizations, Impressionist paintings, or modern art, there's something here to captivate you. We highly recommend booking tickets in advance, especially during peak tourist season! If you're coming from Dubai, there's also a convenient Grand Mosque & Louvre Day Tour you can check out.

The exhibitions cover everything from the origins of the universe and Earth's evolution to the diversity of life, taking a deep dive into the UAE's natural history—including its desert, marine, and mountain ecosystems. It houses rare global artifacts and specimens, most notably a beautifully preserved T-Rex skeleton from the Late Cretaceous period (over 67 million years ago)! Abrahamic Family House

The Abrahamic Family House is the world's first cultural landmark to place a mosque (Islam), a church (Christianity), and a synagogue (Judaism) in the exact same complex. The three places of worship are equal in size and height, beautifully symbolizing equality and coexistence. Designed by a renowned architect, its clean and powerful exterior evokes a deep sense of serene solemnity. Each building incorporates unique religious design elements and lighting—for example, the mosque's walls feature complex geometric patterns that create delicate, intricate light play~ It's not just an architectural masterpiece; it's a cultural landmark that perfectly reflects Abu Dhabi's modern spirit and global vision. An absolute must-visit for anyone interested in culture, architecture, religion, and peace!
★ Desert Safari

Since you're visiting the desert, you absolutely have to experience it properly! Desert safaris are one of the most famous and thrilling ways to do this. Hop into a 4x4 and drive into the endless dunes. Feel the adrenaline rush of dune bashing—every drop, sharp turn, and splash of sand makes it feel like you're on a real-life rollercoaster dancing with the desert! Beyond the driving, most tours also include amazing cultural experiences like camel riding, henna painting, and shisha.

The "Ocean Dome" is the absolute highlight—a spectacular structure where colorful fish swim around, making you feel completely immersed in the deep blue sea. Compared to standard aquariums, the activities here are incredibly diverse and engaging. It's a spot where you can have a blast while learning something new!
A quick tip for the parks: The four parks we just mentioned—Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld, and SeaWorld—are all clustered on Yas Island. If you plan to visit multiple parks, we highly recommend getting the Yas Island Multi-Park Tickets or the Abu Dhabi Pass for the best bang for your buck!
★ Unique Architecture in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has some wonderfully bizarre and unique buildings that you might just spot while driving around~ Keep your eyes peeled and make sure to appreciate them if you pass by! On the left in the photo is the "Al Bahar Towers," often affectionately called the pineapple towers due to their shape. On the right is the giant, boot-shaped "Andaz Capital Gate Hotel."
We actually spotted these while taking the bus from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and while driving from the Grand Mosque towards the Emirates Palace/Etihad Towers. If you want more details on navigating the area, check out our guide 👉🏻 Dubai to Abu Dhabi Transport Guide.
★ Liwa Oasis

"Liwa Oasis," located in southwestern Abu Dhabi (about a 2-3 hour drive from the city center), is one of the UAE's largest oases. Nestled right in the heart of the Arabian desert and surrounded by golden waves of sand, it's a breathtaking, mysterious hidden gem where you can partake in various desert activities. If you really want to dive deep into the desert vibe, you should definitely consider a visit here!
There is a highly-rated resort out here: Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara. It honestly feels like stepping into a magnificent Arabian castle straight out of a fairy tale! You can watch uninterrupted desert sunsets and sunrises right from your private terrace. It is absolutely perfect! We highly recommend it~

🇦🇪 Are Abu Dhabi Passes Worth It?
Since many of Abu Dhabi's top theme parks and hot spots require tickets, Klook offers an awesome Abu Dhabi Pass that lets you choose 1-4 attractions out of 26 options. There's also the Yas Island Multi-Park Tickets, perfect if you just want to hit 2-4 parks (Ferrari, Warner Bros, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld). And if you're coming from next door, the Dubai Pass mainly covers Dubai but actually includes key Abu Dhabi spots like Ferrari World, Qasr Al Watan, and the Louvre! It's super handy if you're visiting Dubai and doing an Abu Dhabi day trip.
To make your life easier, we've organized these passes, the attractions they cover, and individual ticket prices in the table below. This way, you can easily figure out the smartest, most budget-friendly way to book!
🇦🇪 Abu Dhabi Itinerary Guide
When planning a trip, people always ask us: "How many days should I spend in Abu Dhabi?" Cherry feels that 2-3 days is a perfect amount of time to explore the city at a relaxed pace. Of course, it really depends on what you want to do. If you plan to conquer multiple theme parks or venture far out into the desert, you'll naturally need to add more days. But even if you're just doing a quick day trip from Dubai, or making a 48 to 96-hour layover stop, it's totally manageable!
While the attractions are a bit spread out, Qasr Al Watan, Emirates Palace, and Etihad Towers are all right next to each other, and the four theme parks are clustered together on Yas Island. For anything further away, taxis are very affordable. Below is a super easy 4 Days 3 Nights (3 full days) itinerary. It's a nice, relaxed pace, so we didn't cram every single attraction mentioned above into it. Everyone's travel style is different, so use this as a baseline, check the map locations, and swap things out to fit your vibe!

| Day | Itinerary |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Qasr Al Watan + Emirates Palace + Etihad Towers |
| Day 2 | Grand Mosque + Louvre Abu Dhabi |
| Day 3 | Desert Safari + Ferrari World |
If you only have one single day in Abu Dhabi, we highly recommend prioritizing the Grand Mosque. Fill the rest of the day with whatever you like best! However, since Qasr Al Watan, Emirates Palace, and Etihad Towers are all clustered together, they make a perfect combo if you're short on time—just see as much as you can! Also, if your itinerary includes several ticketed attractions, definitely look into the Abu Dhabi Pass; it can end up being much cheaper than buying individual tickets!
🇦🇪 Abu Dhabi Transport Guide
★ City Bus
The cheapest way to get around Abu Dhabi is by taking the public bus. To ride, you'll need to buy a "Hafilat Card"—it works exactly like an Oyster card in London or Dubai's nol card. Just top it up with cash, and tap it on the scanner when you get on and off the bus!
The bus fare is a flat 2 AED boarding fee, plus 0.05 AED per kilometer traveled, but the maximum charge for a single ride is capped at 5 AED. If you transfer to another bus within 60 minutes, you won't be charged the 2 AED boarding fee again (just note that the transfer cannot be a bus going in the exact opposite direction). You can transfer up to two times—meaning you can take up to 3 different buses on that initial 2 AED charge!
★ Bus to Dubai

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are only about an hour and a half apart by car, so lots of travelers (like us!) visit both cities in one trip. If you want to get from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, simply head to the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station and hop on the E100 or E101 bus. If you don't want to deal with the hassle of navigating transport yourself, there are also super convenient Dubai Day Tours departing from Abu Dhabi. They save you a ton of transit time, allowing you to pack more sights into your day!
| Bus to Dubai | E100 | E101 | E102 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boarding Point | Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station | Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station | Ibn Battuta Bus Station |
| Drop-off Point | Ibn Battuta Bus Station | RTA Bus Station Al Ghubaiba | Zayed International Airport |
| Travel Time | From 1.5 hours | From 2 hours | From 1 hr 40 mins |
| Frequency | Weekdays 20-30 mins | Weekdays 20-30 mins | 30-60 mins |
| Fare | 25 AED | 30 AED | 25 AED |
| Payment Method | Dubai Nol Card | Dubai Nol Card | Dubai Nol Card |
Additionally, you can take the E102 bus between Ibn Battuta Bus Station in Dubai and Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi. We aren't entirely sure if you can purchase a Dubai Nol Card at the Abu Dhabi airport (the buses do not accept cash, only Nol Cards). If you already have a Nol Card on hand, you can board the E102 straight from the airport to Dubai's Ibn Battuta Station, and catch the Metro from there. If you're heading from Dubai to the Abu Dhabi airport, you can just use your existing Nol Card!
The intercity buses connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai are operated by Dubai's RTA. For the latest fares and schedules, check the official RTA website or download the RTA App. For a deep dive into getting between these two cities, read our super-detailed Dubai to Abu Dhabi Transport Guide!

★ Taxi
Taxis in Abu Dhabi are silver with a yellow Taxi sign on the roof. Their fares are strictly regulated by the government, meaning pricing is completely transparent, and the best part? There's no surge pricing during peak hours! Fares are very reasonable (check official rates here). You can hail them directly on the street, or book them via the Abu Dhabi Taxi App or the official website.
| Fare (AED) | Day 6am-10pm | Night 10pm-6am |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Fare | 5.00 | 5.50 |
| Per Kilometer | 1.82 | 1.82 |
| Per Minute Waiting | 0.50 | 0.50 |
| Minimum Fare | 12.00 | 12.00 |
| Booking Fee | 4.00 | 5.00 |
★ Uber and Careem
Careem is the largest and most widely used ride-hailing app in the Middle East. It works just like Uber, but it's incredibly ubiquitous in the UAE, and overall, it tends to be a bit cheaper than Uber. It's essentially the Uber of the Middle East! You can even use it to order official government Hala Taxis. If you prefer using credit cards, Apple Pay, or Google Pay, Careem is the way to go—street taxis might sometimes require cash. Here's our quick breakdown comparing standard taxis to Uber/Careem:
| Item | Local Taxi | Uber / Careem |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Usually the cheapest. Regulated, transparent, and NO peak-hour surge pricing. | Dynamic pricing. Base rates are similar to taxis, but prices can spike significantly during high demand. |
| Upfront Quotes | No upfront price; relies entirely on the meter. | Shows the exact total cost before you book, great for budgeting. |
| Vehicle Quality | Standardized cars, reliable quality. | Usually offers newer and slightly more premium vehicles. |
| Payment Method | Cash or card (though some cars might have broken card readers). | Linked to your credit card/Pay, entirely cashless and super quick. |
★ Airport Taxi
Because the official Airport Taxis are government-regulated with transparent pricing, they are generally the most cost-effective way to leave the airport compared to booking an Uber or Careem. The airport taxi fares are as follows:
| Fare (AED) | Day 6am-10pm | Night 10pm-6am |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Fare | 20.00 | 20.00 |
| Per Kilometer | 1.82 | 1.82 |
| Per Minute Waiting | 0.50 | 0.50 |
| Booking Fee | 4.00 | 5.00 |
★ Robotaxi
Did you know Abu Dhabi is the very first city outside the United States to offer fully autonomous Robotaxis on the Uber platform?! Launched in November 2025 through a partnership between Abu Dhabi, Uber, and the autonomous driving company WeRide (not Tesla!), these driverless cabs are currently operating in specific zones, primarily around Yas Island. If you're heading to places like Yas Mall, Ferrari World, or Warner Bros. World, and your route is within the service area, you might see an exciting "Autonomous" option pop up on your Uber app! We tried Waymo's driverless cars in San Francisco and it was so incredibly cool~ If you get the chance, definitely give it a try!
🇦🇪 Abu Dhabi Pre-trip Preparation
★ Visa
Hong Kong passport holders get a 30-day visa on arrival in the UAE. Passports from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, etc., receive a 90-day visa on arrival (check the exemption list here). Taiwan passport holders, however, are not on the visa-free list and must apply in advance. Be careful when searching online—some sites charge exorbitant fees or are straight-up scams that take your money without issuing a visa! If you are staying for a short trip (under 4 days), the safest route is applying for a transit visa directly through your airline, like the Etihad Airways Transit Visa or the Emirates Airlines Transit Visa. There are two options: 48 hours and 96 hours. Keep in mind that a 48-hour visa cannot be extended to 96 hours once issued!
| Transit Visa | 48 Hours | 96 Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Requirements | Passport valid for 3 months / ID photo / Onward ticket | Passport valid for 6 months / ID photo / Onward ticket |
| Application Fee | Free | AED 50 |
| Departure Fee | AED 30 | AED 30 |
If you plan to stay longer than 96 hours, you'll need to apply for a standard tourist visa. The most secure way is via the links provided on the official UAE government website. If you use a third-party platform, read reviews carefully to ensure you aren't getting scammed.
★ Time Zone & Voltage
◆ Time Difference: Abu Dhabi is 4 hours behind Taiwan/Hong Kong time (UTC+4).
◆ Voltage: 230V 50Hz
◆ Plug: UK style / Type G 3-pin flat plug
| Item | Abu Dhabi | Hong Kong | Taiwan, US, Canada |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plug Type | Type G | Type G | Type A / B |
| Standard Voltage | 230V | 220V | 110V / 120V |
The UAE uses Type G plugs (the one with three rectangular prongs), which is exactly the same as in Hong Kong and the UK. Although the voltage is slightly different (230V vs 220V), modern electronics (which usually support 100V-240V) handle this perfectly fine, so no voltage converter is needed. However, travelers from Taiwan, the US, or Canada will definitely need to bring a plug adapter and verify their electronics' voltage compatibility!
★ Weather & Best Time to Visit
Located right in the desert, the UAE's summers are blisteringly hot, making it impossible to stay outdoors for long—this is the tourist off-season. The absolute best time to visit Dubai and Abu Dhabi is during the winter months from November to March. The weather is cool, breezy, and comfortable, hovering around 15°C - 28°C. During our trip in December, we happily wore short sleeves during the day and even hit the water parks without feeling cold! Just pack a light jacket for the cooler mornings and evenings if you get chilly easily.
★ Ramadan
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, it shifts by about 10-12 days every year against the Gregorian calendar, meaning Ramadan never falls on the exact same dates. Since it's a deeply important religious period, public transport, dining options, and attraction operating hours may be affected. If you want to avoid traveling during Ramadan, double-check the dates before you lock in your flights and hotels!
| Year | Ramadan Dates |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Feb 17 – Mar 19 |
| 2027 | Feb 7 – Mar 8 |
★ Dress Code
Compared to its famous neighboring city Dubai, Abu Dhabi is slightly more conservative. Don't worry though—in tourist areas like hotels, resorts, shopping malls, and theme parks, standard summer clothes like short sleeves, shorts, and summer dresses are completely acceptable. However, when venturing into traditional markets or non-touristy areas, we recommend wearing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees as a sign of respect.
It is crucial to note that important landmarks like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque have strict dress codes. Women must wear opaque, loose-fitting clothing that completely covers their hair, neck, wrists, and ankles. Men cannot wear sleeveless shirts or shorts. Qasr Al Watan is a bit more relaxed but still enforces a dress code. Make sure you understand the rules before visiting these cultural sites so you don't get turned away at the door!
★ Currency & Exchange
Both Dubai and Abu Dhabi use the UAE Dirham (abbreviated as AED, DH, or DHS). The Dirham is pegged to the US Dollar at a fixed exchange rate of approximately $1 USD ≈ 3.67 AED. Based on our real-world experience exchanging cash, here's the hierarchy of rates 👉🏻 Hotels > Airport > Private Exchange Bureaus in malls (like Al Ansari Exchange or UAE Exchange). For a $1 USD bill during our trip, our rates looked like this:
| Location | USD : AED |
|---|---|
| Hotel | USD$1 : AED 3.47 |
| Airport | USD$1 : AED 3.61 |
| City Exchange | USD$1 : AED 3.65 |
In short, private exchange bureaus in malls offer the best rates, followed by the airport, while hotels will give you the worst rate! If you're worried about needing cash immediately, just exchange a small amount at the airport and do the rest in the city. Also, bringing larger USD bills usually gets you a better exchange rate!
★ Tipping Culture
Wondering if you need to tip? Here are the suggested tipping amounts for Dubai and Abu Dhabi 👇🏻
| Service | Suggested Tip |
|---|---|
| Hotel Housekeeping | USD$1 – 2 or AED 5 – 10 |
| Hotel Bellhop | USD$1 – 2 or AED 5 – 10 |
| Restaurants | 10 – 15% |
| Taxi / Uber Drivers | AED 5 – 10 or just let them keep the change |
★ Other Tips
We know how much people love taking photos of locals and street life while traveling 📷, but you need to be very careful in Abu Dhabi! Never take photos of local women without their explicit permission, as this is taken very seriously and can lead to severe consequences. Additionally, while photography is completely allowed inside the mosques, avoid overly intimate poses or dramatic fashion-shoot poses out of respect for the solemn and sacred environment.
