★ US Visa
Before heading to New York, aside from booking flights and hotels, the most crucial step is getting your US visa sorted. Depending on your passport and the purpose of your stay, this usually falls into two categories: the ESTA Visa Waiver Program or the B1/B2 Tourist Visa. If you hold a passport from one of the 40+ countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (such as Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, etc. — check the official website for eligible countries) and plan to stay for no more than 90 days, applying for an ESTA is all you need.
☆ ESTA Visa Waiver Program
◆ Eligibility: Tourism or business purposes, staying up to 90 days.
◆ Application Fee: $40.27 USD (latest 2026 pricing).
◆ Validity: Two years (multiple entries allowed; if you renew your passport, you must reapply for ESTA).
◆ Application Time: We highly recommend applying online at least 72 hours before departure. Please use the official ESTA website to avoid being overcharged by third-party agencies. ‼️Note‼️ There are many fake agency websites out there that look incredibly similar to the official one, charging up to $80-$100 USD. Always make sure the URL ends in .gov when applying!
☆ B1/B2 Business/Tourist Visa
If your passport isn't eligible for ESTA, you plan to stay in the US for more than 90 days, or you've visited certain countries during specific timeframes, you'll need to apply for a B1/B2 Business/Tourist Visa.
📍 Visited Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen after March 1, 2011.
📍 Visited Cuba after January 12, 2021.
For example, in Taiwan, applying for a B1/B2 visa requires an in-person interview at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
◆ Application Fee: $185 USD.
◆ Validity: Typically 5 years, multiple entries.
◆ Duration of Stay: Up to 180 days (ultimately decided by the customs officer).
◆ Application Process: Fill out the DS-160 form → Pay the fee → Schedule an interview (remember to bring your DS-160 confirmation page).
☆ Pre-Departure Checklist
◆ Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from the US.
◆ Return Flight Ticket: Customs officers might ask to see proof of your return or onward ticket upon entry.
◆ Accommodation Address: You'll need to provide the exact address of your New York hotel when applying for ESTA and filling out your arrival declaration.
★ New York Time Difference
Because New York observes Daylight Saving Time (DST), the time difference varies between summer and winter. For example, if it's 12:00 PM (noon) in Taiwan, it's 12:00 AM (midnight) of the same day in New York during the summer, but 11:00 PM the previous night during the winter.
| Season | Time Difference |
|---|---|
| March to October | 12 hours behind Taiwan |
| November to February | 13 hours behind Taiwan |
★ Voltage
New York's voltage is 110V-120V with a frequency of 60Hz. This is very close to Taiwan's 110V. The sockets are mainly Type A (two flat parallel pins) and Type B (three pins). Therefore, most Taiwanese appliances can be plugged in directly without needing a voltage converter or adapter.
★ Is New York Safe? What to Watch Out For?
Over the past couple of years, New York's safety has actually improved significantly! Overall crime data shows a downward trend, particularly with a massive drop in murders and shootings. Subway crime rates have even hit a 16-year low. It's currently rated as one of the safest large cities in America. For us tourists, rather than violent crime, we need to be much more mindful of "property loss/theft." In incredibly crowded places like Times Square, you absolutely must keep a close eye on your phone and wallet. Here are a few safety tips we'd like to share that apply to major US cities in general:
◆ Wear your bag in front: Zip it up completely. This is a basic rule in any crowded area.
◆ Use a phone lanyard: We strongly recommend wearing your phone on a lanyard across your body. It prevents someone from snatching it out of your hand and also saves you from dropping it while taking photos.
◆ Don't force your way onto the subway: If the platform is too crowded or the vibe in the carriage feels off, just wait for the next train. Safety first!
◆ Stay alert: Don't just stare down at your phone when walking. Keep your head up and observe your surroundings.
◆ Say no to strangers: In Times Square, do not accept CDs or random items handed to you by people on the street. Also, avoid taking photos with costumed characters unless you're prepared to tip them heavily.
◆ Beware of the empty subway car: If a train arrives and every carriage is packed except for one empty car, DO NOT go in there. It usually means there's a terrible smell, bodily fluids, or a potentially aggressive person inside.
◆ If you encounter a strange person: No eye contact, no responding, and do not stop walking. Use your peripheral vision to stay alert and leave the area as quickly as possible.
From our own personal experience walking around New York, as long as you stay in popular tourist areas with plenty of foot traffic, it feels very safe. We actually didn't encounter any situations that made us feel uneasy. Just avoid quiet, dark alleys and stay vigilant, and the charm of the Big Apple is absolutely yours to explore with peace of mind!
★ New York Tipping Culture
In the US, "Tip" or "Gratuity" is a primary source of income for service industry workers. While it might take some getting used to for Asian tourists, it is basic etiquette in New York. Here's a quick reference guide for dining and service tipping rates in 2026:
| Situation | Tip Amount |
|---|---|
| Restaurant Lunch (Dine-in) | 15%-18% of the pre-tax total |
| Restaurant Dinner (Dine-in) | 18%-22% of the pre-tax total |
| Takeout | No tip required, or $1-$2 USD as a gesture of appreciation |
| Taxi / Uber / Lyft | 15%-20% of the fare |
| Hotel Bellhop | $2-$5 USD for bringing luggage to your room, depending on the number of bags |
| Daily Hotel Housekeeping | $2-$5 USD left on the bedside table |
A few things to note: Tips are usually calculated based on the "pre-tax" amount. However, many credit card machines nowadays automatically generate suggested percentages based on the "post-tax" total. You can manually adjust this when you pay. If you're tipping in cash, it's recommended to use paper bills ($1 or $5 bills); leaving coins is uncommon and generally frowned upon. Also, always check your bill before tipping! Some restaurants in popular tourist areas might pre-add the gratuity, or if you're dining in a group of 6 or more, a service charge is often automatically included. In these cases, you don't need to tip extra. Before you pay, look for words like "Service Charge" or "Tip Included" on the receipt.
★ Can You Drink New York Tap Water?
New York's tap water primarily comes from protected reservoirs in the Catskill Mountains. It undergoes rigorous filtration and meets US drinking water standards. A bottle of water in NY can cost anywhere from $3 to $5 USD, which adds up quickly over a day! If you don't mind drinking tap water, you can bring your own reusable bottle and fill it up at your hotel before heading out. You can also make good use of public water fountains while exploring the city during the day, saving quite a bit on "water expenses." Tap water in most hotels is perfectly fine to drink, but if you're staying in a historic, older hotel and are worried about old pipes, just check if the water runs clear first.
★ Best Months to Visit New York
When is the best weather for traveling to New York? The early summer months of May and June, as well as early autumn from September to October, offer the most comfortable temperatures. Early summer in New York awakens from the harsh winter with lush, vibrant greenery, while early autumn gradually paints the city in beautiful fall colors. Traveling during these months means you can avoid the humid, sweltering heat of peak summer and the inconvenience of packing heavy winter gear.
However, if you want to experience the ultimate festive vibe, we highly recommend visiting New York in December! Whether it's the giant Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, the dazzling holiday window displays along Fifth Avenue, the open-air ice skating rink in Central Park, or the iconic New Year's Eve countdown in Times Square, it is unbelievably magical. Just be prepared—temperatures usually hover around 0°C (32°F). It's a magical but chilly experience!

★ The Oculus
☆ Location: 185 Greenwich St LL3110, New York|Map Link
☆ Hours: 24 hours

The Oculus at the New York World Trade Center is a pure white steel structure stretching neatly upwards, resembling the massive wings of a bird. The architect designed it to capture the image of "hands releasing a dove." The World Trade Center PATH station isn't just a major transit hub connecting 12 subway lines with over a million passengers a week; it's also a profound memorial to the events of 9/11. Sunlight streams through the skylight in the center of the building, casting a beam known as the "Wedge of Light" onto the concourse floor. Every year on September 11th, this beam of light, shifting with the sun, aligns perfectly at the exact times the Twin Towers were attacked, casting parallel columns of light that symbolize remembrance of the lost and hope for rebirth. If you happen to be passing by, step into the main hall to experience the transcendent beauty and tranquility of the architecture. Nearby, you'll find the 9/11 Museum, the Memorial Park, the Westfield shopping center, and the Eataly Italian food market, perfect for grabbing a bite!
★ 9/11 Memorial & Museum
☆ Location: 180 Greenwich St, New York|Map Link

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is located directly beneath the original World Trade Center site. The exhibit halls also feature audio recordings from survivors, tributes from the families of the victims, and stories of heroic rescue efforts. The 9/11 Museum doesn't just recount a tragedy; it documents how New Yorkers supported one another during the disaster, showcasing the ultimate brilliance of human nature and revealing the power of rebirth amidst the ruins. While the history is heavy, for many travelers, the 9/11 Museum is the most deeply moving stop on their trip.
★ 9/11 Memorial
☆ Location: 180 Greenwich St, New York|Map Link
☆ Hours: Daily 8am-8pm

The 9/11 Memorial pools sit exactly on the footprints of the original North and South Twin Towers. The designer created them so water cascades down the sides and gathers into a square, seemingly bottomless dark hole in the center. No matter how much water flows in, that abyss can never be filled. It symbolizes the void in the hearts of the victims' families that can never be mended, and the permanent historical scar that 9/11 left on New York. The names of the 2,983 victims are inscribed on the bronze parapets surrounding the pools. Every morning, staff members place a white rose on the names of those who would have had a birthday that day, symbolizing that the city of New York has "never forgotten" them. Aside from taking photos, take a moment to quietly listen to the sound of the water slowly cascading down the walls, drowning out the traffic and honking of downtown Manhattan. It's a rare moment of peace to remember the departed right in the center of the city. Experience the solemnity and tranquility of what is arguably New York's most moving landscape. A gentle reminder: please refrain from smiling too broadly or posing cheerfully when taking photos here, as this event remains a deep source of pain for New York and the entire United States…
★ Wall Street

The world-famous Wall Street represents American power, history, and that relentless "tycoon spirit." Though many financial institutions have since relocated to Midtown, Wall Street's symbolic status as the "financial center of the world" remains unshakable. Wall Street has several must-photograph tourist spots, including the Charging Bull, the Fearless Girl, the New York Stock Exchange, and Federal Hall National Memorial with the George Washington Statue. The Charging Bull is a massive hit with tourists—its horns (symbolizing a booming "bull market") and testicles (symbolizing good luck and wealth) have literally been rubbed shiny by visitors! Attractions around Wall Street include Trinity Church, the World Trade Center, the 9/11 Museum, and the departure point for the Statue of Liberty ferry. You can easily bundle them all together for a full-day itinerary!
★ Trinity Church
☆ Location: 89 Broadway, New York|Map Link
☆ Hours: Daily 8:30am-6pm

Built in 1697, New York's "Trinity Church" stands with quiet grace amidst towering skyscrapers. On the hurried and fast-paced Wall Street, it creates a striking contrast between bustling and peaceful, classical and modern! The church's Gothic spire exterior, along with its exquisite stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings inside, are incredibly beautiful. The bronze entrance doors, modeled after the "Gates of Paradise" at the Florence Baptistery in Italy, are covered in intricate reliefs of biblical stories and are definitely worth a close look.
★ SoHo

New York's SoHo (South of Houston Street) district naturally blends history, art, fashion, and city life, making it one of the best neighborhoods to truly feel the local New York vibe while taking a stroll. SoHo is famous for its well-preserved 19th-century cast-iron architecture. The intricate details on the facades, complete with fire escapes and large windows, give it a very distinct character. During the 20th century, it was a hub for artists, and today it still retains a strong sense of creativity and design; you can often spot "traces of art" in its alleyways. Additionally, SoHo gathers many international brands, designer boutiques, and select shops, making it perfect for those who love stylish shopping and prefer avoiding traditional mega-malls. If you prefer urban aesthetics, lifestyle vibes, and a slower-paced exploration over "checking off specific landmarks," definitely head to SoHo for a wander!

How can you visit New York and not see the Statue of Liberty? The "Statue of Liberty" isn't just New York's most iconic landmark; it's the ultimate symbol of American independence and freedom. When planning to see Lady Liberty, you first need to decide if you want to set foot on the island. To do so, you must take the official Statue City Cruises ferry, departing from either Battery Park in Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Visiting the island takes at least half a day. If you decide not to land, there are several other ways to admire her. Cherry has put together the following options for you~
| Location | Why We Recommend It | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Staten Island Ferry | Free round-trip (approx. 1 hour), captures the side profile of the statue | Departs from Whitehall Terminal. Stand on the right side on the way there, left side on the way back |
| New York Landmarks Cruise | Unlocks the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and three famous Manhattan bridges at once | Hits multiple NY landmarks in 90 minutes |
| One World Observatory | Stunning, sweeping views of the entire harbor from high above | Viewed from a distance |
| Battery Park Lookout | Viewing spot for the statue right from the park | You can check out the SeaGlass Carousel while you're there |
| Liberty State Park | View the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline simultaneously | Located in New Jersey |
Right in the park where you board the ferry in Manhattan, there's an underwater-themed carousel. If you have little ones with you, definitely swing by and check it out! For more info, see 25 Best Things to Do in New York with Kids
★ Brooklyn Bridge
☆ Location: Map Link

The "Brooklyn Bridge" is an incredibly iconic part of the New York skyline, frequently featured in films, photography, and literature. When completed in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world! The bridge features dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths. If you want to walk across, we recommend starting from Brooklyn and walking toward Manhattan (this direction lets you take in the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline simultaneously). Along the way, you'll enjoy views of the Statue of Liberty, the city skyline, beautiful river scenery, and an up-close look at the magnificent bridge itself! Even if you don't walk across it, there are several great ways to admire the Brooklyn Bridge:
| Location | Why We Recommend It | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Time Out Market New York | The rooftop offers great views of the Brooklyn Bridge | You can grab a bite to eat while you're there |
| Brooklyn Bridge Park | Up-close views of the bridge and the Manhattan skyline | Located in Brooklyn |
| Pier 17 | The rooftop is a spectacular spot to view the bridge | Features seasonal decorations at certain times of the year |
| Pier 35 | Sit on a porch swing while admiring both the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges | Rivals a free observation deck |
| One World Observatory | Bird's-eye view of the bridge, the riverfront, and Brooklyn | The best high-altitude observatory for viewing the bridge |
| NYC Ferry | The most affordable way to cruise the river and pass under multiple bridges | The ride is shorter than dedicated sightseeing cruises |
| New York Landmarks Cruise | Unlocks the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and three famous Manhattan bridges at once | Hits multiple NY landmarks in 90 minutes |
DUMBO
☆ Location: DUMBO|Map Link

"DUMBO" stands for "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass," which simply means the waterfront area sandwiched between the "Brooklyn Bridge" and the "Manhattan Bridge." Historically, this was a run-down industrial warehouse district, but after its transformation, it is now one of the most "hipster/artsy" neighborhoods in New York. Expect 19th-century red brick factories and warehouses, cobblestone streets, rusty old train tracks, and modern murals painted on brick walls. That classic New York photo you see online of "the Manhattan Bridge framed by red brick buildings" is taken right here! If you're traveling as a family, we highly recommend riding Jane's Carousel by the river. Riding a vintage carousel while taking in views of the two bridges, the river, and the Manhattan skyline is absolutely dreamy!
Brooklyn Bridge Park
☆ Location: Brooklyn Bridge Park|Map Link

If DUMBO is a refined hipster living room, then Brooklyn Bridge Park is New York's most expansive "ocean-view backyard." Stretching for about 2 kilometers along the waterfront, it not only boasts the most stunning, unobstructed, postcard-perfect views of the New York skyline, but it's also widely recognized as the best spot in the city to watch the sunset. At the park's "Old Pier 1," you can see old wooden pilings jutting out of the water against a backdrop of modern architecture. It provides an incredibly dramatic photographic composition and is a hidden gem that many photographers specifically seek out!
★ Harry Potter Store
☆ Location: 935 Broadway, New York|Map Link
☆ Hours: Mon-Thu 10am-8pm|Fri-Sat 9am-9pm|Sun 10am-7pm|Official Website

The Harry Potter Store in New York remains the largest Harry Potter flagship store in the world! Inside, not only are numerous movie scenes recreated for amazing photo ops, but there are also magical interactive installations. Whether it's flying over London on a broomstick, staring into a Pensieve that reveals moving images, or sipping on the wizarding world's signature Butterbeer, the immersive experiences truly make you feel like you've entered the magical world! The vast array of Harry Potter merchandise is also incredibly fun to browse. It's simply a fantastic, fun-filled spot where both adults and kids can shop, play, and take great pictures!

★ Madison Square Park
☆ Location: 11 Madison Ave, New York|Map Link
☆ Hours: Daily 10am-5pm

Opened in the mid-19th century, "Madison Square Park" is one of New York's oldest parks. While it's not as vast or grandiose as Central Park, its downtown location lets you enjoy surrounding skyscrapers from within a leafy oasis. It's a slice of greenery you simply can't ignore amidst New York city life! Not only can you admire the iconic "Flatiron Building" from the park, but there's also a playground for kids to burn off energy, and you can visit the very birthplace of the famous burger brand "Shake Shack"! Shake Shack started as a hot dog cart here in 2004, and after gaining massive popularity, they opened their very first permanent kiosk right inside Madison Square Park. It's the perfect spot to slot between attractions for a quick rest, soak in the NY vibe, and grab a famous burger!
★ Flatiron Building
☆ Location: 175 5th Ave, New York|Map Link

Built in 1902, the "Flatiron Building" looks like an architect was playing extreme Tetris, forcefully squeezing a triangular high-rise into the wedge of land where Fifth Avenue and Broadway intersect. Its nickname comes from its shape, which closely resembles a clothes iron. Looking like a classical building straight out of a movie, it stands narrow yet perfectly straight on the street corner. While it's not New York's tallest building, it's absolutely one of its most unique! Today, the Flatiron Building is a famous New York landmark. Plus, it's close to many other tourist spots like the Harry Potter Store and Madison Square Park. If you're feeling artsy, you can pop into Rizzoli Bookstore. It's totally the kind of iconic photo-op you can check off quickly while walking by!
★ LEGOLAND New York
☆ Location: 1 Legoland Blvd, Goshen, NY|Map Link
☆ Hours: Daily 10am-6pm|Park Map Download

If you're traveling with kids under 12, we highly recommend planning a trip to LEGOLAND New York, located just a 1.5-hour drive from the city! It's an awesome fusion of a children's amusement park full of LEGO whimsy and a water park. The park features seven themed lands, including Ninjago, Pirates, Castle, and LEGO City, along with Miniland, which boasts American cityscapes built from tens of millions of LEGO bricks. Every section is packed with LEGO models and rides! Most importantly, the crowds aren't overwhelming, so queue times are super reasonable, allowing you to ride tons of different attractions all day long. It's a highly photogenic, incredibly fun theme park with fantastic value for money!

★ New York Transport
☆ Subway
If you're coming to New York now, you really don't need to buy a MetroCard anymore! New York has fully rolled out the OMNY (One Metro New York) payment system. As long as your phone has Apple Pay or Google Pay, or you have a contactless credit card, you can just "tap" the sensor at the turnstile to get in! Just remember to use the same credit card/device to tap in throughout your trip, because the system automatically applies "Fare Capping." If you tap 12 times with the same payment method between Monday and Sunday, all subsequent rides for the rest of that week are completely free! So, when planning your itinerary, you no longer have to calculate whether the $34 USD 7-Day Pass is worth it. Just mindlessly tap the same card—it's super convenient! According to NY subway rules, children under 44 inches (about 112 cm) tall ride for free when accompanied by an adult. However, because the New York subway is historic, many stations only have stairs. If you have little ones and a stroller, you can use the MTA App or Google Maps to filter for "wheelchair accessible" stations. Finally, a quick tip on timing: try to avoid the commuter rush hours of 8:00-9:00 AM and 5:00-6:00 PM if you can!
☆ Ferry

Most people ride the subway in New York, but the NYC Ferry is actually an incredibly cost-effective way to get around. For just $4.50 USD one-way, you get a million-dollar view of the Manhattan skyline!
◆ Adult Fare: Approx. $4–$4.50 one-way (check official announcements).
◆ Kids Ride Free: Children under 44 inches (approx. 112 cm) ride free.
◆ Transfer Policy: Your ticket is valid for 120 minutes upon activation, allowing one free transfer to another ferry route.
◆ Important Note: The ferry and the subway are completely different systems, so you CANNOT use OMNY or Apple Pay directly at the turnstiles!
◆ How to Buy Tickets: We recommend using the "NYC Ferry" App. Select "Buy Tickets" in the app, enter your credit card info, and when you're ready to board, click "Activate" to display an animated QR Code.
◆ Recommended Routes: The most classic route is the East River (ER) route, which takes you right to DUMBO in Brooklyn. The St. George route lets you admire the Statue of Liberty from afar (though it's further away than the dedicated sightseeing cruises). If you want a closer look for free, consider the Staten Island Ferry.
