Many Chinese restaurants in North America have a tradition of giving guests fortune cookies after their meal. Crack open the uniquely shaped 3D cookie, and inside you'll find a little slip of paper with a different fortune—often sparking fun conversations around the dinner table! Interestingly enough, this fortune cookie culture didn't actually originate in Asia. It wasn't until we came to San Francisco that we discovered the birthplace of the fortune cookie is right here! Tucked inside San Francisco's Chinatown is the "Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory," a historic shop that's been running for over 60 years. Not only do they sell all sorts of fortune cookies, but they also have a working factory where you can watch exactly how these iconic treats are made. It's truly one of the most popular and fascinating attractions in San Francisco!

The Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory is tucked away in a small alley right in the heart of San Francisco's famous Chinatown. At one end of the alley, you can spot a sign on the wall—just follow it, and you're heading in the right direction!

This alley, known as Ross Alley, also goes by the Chinese name "Old Luzon Alley" (舊呂宋巷). Rumor has it that from the 1950s through the 1990s, many Chinese-American women supported their families by working as seamstresses in garment factories along this very street. Fast forward to today, and the alley is most famous for housing this incredible factory where you can witness the art of hand-folding fortune cookies!

The alley itself is actually quite well-maintained and lined with various beautiful murals. One of them even features a map that conveniently paints your current location right onto the wall!

Before long, we arrived at the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory! A long red banner hung proudly at the entrance, announcing their 62-year legacy.

Right at the entrance of the factory, you'll immediately notice the entire shop is plastered with embroidered patches.

Because the patches were so eye-catching, we wondered if the owner was an avid collector. Curiosity got the better of us, so we asked the staff, only to discover that every single patch was left behind by visiting customers! It really goes to show how many people from all over the world have visited this little shop. After finding out we were visiting from Taiwan, they even specially pointed out a patch from the Taipei City Police Department for us to see!

Aside from the patches, the walls are also covered with photos, likely capturing the visits of various celebrities over the years!

When you step inside, the staff hands everyone a sample of their flat, round "unfinished" cookies. The taste is completely different from the typical fortune cookies you get at Chinese restaurants! They have a satisfying, solid crunch with a rich, fragrant cookie aroma. Sweet and delicious, they will absolutely make you want to keep reaching for more!

The shop itself actually isn't very large. The working factory is right behind the shelves, which is where all the fortune cookies are made by hand. The shelves on both sides are just overflowing with all sorts of cookie varieties!

It wasn't until Cherry visited for the second time that she noticed the mural on the back wall of the factory! The painting features famous San Francisco landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, the Transamerica Pyramid, the Chinatown Gateway, and, of course, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory itself.

Since opening its doors in 1962, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory has preserved the traditional craft of hand-making fortune cookies to this day.

Here, you can witness the creation process of every single cookie with your own eyes! From mixing the batter, to baking them to a golden brown in round molds, to slipping the paper fortunes inside while they're still piping hot, and finally hand-folding them into that classic fortune cookie shape. Watching the bakers expertly and rapidly form each cookie by hand is honestly so therapeutic and mesmerizing.

They even have massive, giant-sized fortune cookies!

These giant fortune cookies will set you back $10 USD each.

Inside this supersized treat, you won't find a giant fortune—instead, it houses two regular-sized fortune cookies! However, to hold that large folded shape, the cookie itself is incredibly thick and dense, making it quite hard to bite into. Let's just say it looks better than it tastes! This magnified version is actually bigger than my three-year-old son's face, so it's absolutely perfect for taking cute, Instagram-worthy photos!

If you're looking for delicious cookies to snack on, we highly recommend getting the regular size—it's much more practical. For the same $10 USD, you get a huge, tasty bag! Aside from the original flavor, you can also choose from chocolate, strawberry, and green tea. If you just love the taste of the cookie itself, you can buy bags of the flat, round "unfinished" ones. For the same packaging size, you get way more of the flat cookies, and more importantly, you don't have to worry about the 3D folded ones getting crushed in your luggage. Since our son was absolutely obsessed with eating these, we ultimately just bought a bag of the flat ones to slowly enjoy later!

If you want something a bit more memorable, you can actually write your own personalized fortunes and have the staff fold them into the cookies for you! They'll pack them neatly in little takeout boxes—one for $2 USD, or two for $3.50 USD. Or, if you want a truly hands-on experience, they offer an activity where you can fold the fortune cookies yourself. It costs $25 USD for about three minutes, so you're really just paying for the unique experience!

This is the spot where you write your own fortunes. Just pen your message, grab one of the little takeout boxes nearby, and hand it to the bakers to fold it in!

They also sell these gorgeous ones dipped in colorful chocolates for $13.50 USD a box.

A lot of information online says they are cash-only, but Cherry tested it out and found that they do accept credit cards—even American Express, which many places turn down! If you make a purchase, they'll give you a brand-new shopping bag and even throw in a few extra flat cookies for free.

The Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory really isn't large at all. The view from the front door is exactly what you see in the photo above, so it’s definitely a quick attraction you can easily tick off your list in about 10 to 20 minutes.

Cherry also highly recommends this spot for families with kids! Being able to see the fortune cookie-making process right before your eyes is a beautifully unique experience for both adults and children. The freshly made cookies feel like they use very solid, honest ingredients, and the kids were incredibly happy snacking on them.

The factory is located right in Chinatown. Aside from wandering around Chinatown itself, you can easily pair this with visits to nearby spots like City Lights Bookstore, the Transamerica Pyramid, R&G Lounge (a Michelin-recommended restaurant!), and the Cable Car Museum! It's also a fantastic backup plan if you're ever stuck in the rain, since this indoor attraction isn't weather-dependent. When we visited on a rainy day, we were actually the only group in the entire store! We didn't have to deal with crowds and even got to chat with the staff for a bit, which was really lovely!
