City Lights Bookstore is perfectly located right next to Chinatown, meaning you can easily pair it with a bunch of nearby attractions! For example, you can visit the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, check out the Transamerica Pyramid, dine at the Michelin-recommended R&G Lounge, or admire the Chinatown Chinese Zodiac Wall right in the alley beside the bookstore. Everything is just a 5 to 7-minute walk away! If you're heading to San Francisco's Chinatown, we highly recommend checking out these nearby spots together.

The exterior of the bookstore has a very unique shape. Instead of a typical square building, it sits right at the intersection of two streets, forming an inverted triangle. In the window at the corner, you'll spot a poster that says "Books not Bombs." This powerful slogan advocates for replacing war and violence with books and knowledge. It conveys the idea that society's resources and energy should be poured into education, learning, culture, and intellectual growth rather than conflict. It encourages people to value the power of books and see them as true tools to change the world.

On one of the exterior walls, there's a huge, vibrant mural with a distinctly exotic flair. We're not entirely sure if the mural is directly connected to the bookstore, but right next to it, you'll see "City Lights Books" painted in bold black letters on a bright yellow background.

Since City Lights is adjacent to Chinatown, if you walk down the alley beside the mural, you'll see a unique blend of East and West! One side features an English graffiti wall, while the other displays a massive Chinese character "騰" (Téng, meaning to soar or gallop). Overhead, banners featuring the "Hundred Family Surnames" are strung across the alley, creating a beautiful cross-cultural landscape.

The alley is officially named Jack Kerouac Alley. If you look closely at that wall, the character "騰" is actually made entirely out of red and pink red envelopes (hongbao)! This spot is known as the "Chinese Zodiac Wall." We heard that they create a different character every year. Since it's the Year of the Dragon, they chose "騰" to symbolize flying high and soaring to new heights.

The other side of the bookstore's exterior is just as photo-worthy. The combination of the classic large storefront windows with San Francisco's iconic Transamerica Pyramid looming in the background makes it a popular spot for visitors to stop and snap a picture!

City Lights Bookstore is divided into three floors. The first floor features fiction, the second floor is dedicated to poetry, and the basement houses non-fiction and children's books.

As soon as we walked into the store, we were greeted by an antique, cinematic vibe. The massive collection of old wooden bookshelves instantly transports you back in time with a comforting wave of nostalgia.

With its sea of books, the artistic atmosphere is truly maxed out! Every section is clearly labeled with its genre. This particular area, for instance, is dedicated to European Literature.

Walking through an archway, just before the stairs leading to the second floor, you'll find an independent section showcasing books published right here by City Lights.

It turns out that City Lights Bookstore is also a publisher! They founded their own publishing division, City Lights Publishers, in 1955, and it played a crucial role in American literature and counterculture movements. Their most famous publications are works from the Beat Generation, including Jack Kerouac's On the Road and Allen Ginsberg's Howl. All in all, City Lights Bookstore isn't just an iconic San Francisco cultural landmark; it's a publisher with deep literary roots that has had a lasting impact on literature and thought in the US and around the world.

The interior space feels very layered and dynamic. The clever use of split levels and varying ceiling heights creates a spacious and open atmosphere.

Coming up to the second floor, the entire space is wrapped in wooden bookshelves. The wooden table in the center is piled high with books, accompanied by a black sign boldly declaring it the "Poetry Room." With sunlight spilling in through the windows, the simple setup feels incredibly poetic.

Tucked into many corners of the store are chairs where you can sit down, relax, and read.

The second floor even has a dedicated section for "Beat Literature."

The walls are adorned with works and photographs of various poets and authors, particularly art and literary materials related to the Beat Generation. It completely immerses the space in a rich, literary vibe.

Here are the stairs leading to the basement, with a large overhead sign listing the book genres you'll find downstairs.

The basement's collection is just as impressively massive!

Even the space beneath the staircase is packed full of books.

We found a super cute section dedicated specifically to children's books about San Francisco!

Because City Lights was located right near the stop for our Hop-On Hop-Off Sightseeing Bus, we basically popped in for a quick browse every morning while waiting for our ride. On our very first day, a friendly staff member kindly told us about the children's books downstairs. So, if you're traveling with little ones who love to read, definitely bring them to City Lights for a visit!

If you have a stroller with you, you can always ask the staff if you can park it by the front desk. We went in first thing in the morning right when they opened, and the whole bookstore was empty! It was fantastic for taking photos and exploring without having to worry about disturbing other people reading or shopping.

To wrap it up, City Lights Bookstore is a place of incredible literary and historical significance in San Francisco. Even if you aren't deeply knowledgeable about American literature, the classic, nostalgic interior and its exotic, artistic charm make it a 100% must-visit spot for anyone who loves hipster culture. Plus, since it's located so close to several other amazing San Francisco attractions, you should absolutely add it to your itinerary!
