The California Academy of Sciences is a historic natural science institution founded in 1853, making it older than the state of California itself and one of the oldest scientific institutions in the US! After the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the academy moved to its current location in Golden Gate Park and reopened in 1916. Amazing facilities like the aquarium and planetarium were gradually added during the mid-to-late 20th century, transforming it step by step into a diverse scientific hub. Later, due to the aging of the original building, a massive reconstruction project began in 2005. After three years of work, it officially reopened in 2008! Today, the California Academy of Sciences welcomes over a million visitors annually, establishing itself as a premier center for science education on the West Coast.

There are two main types of tickets for the California Academy of Sciences: the standard daytime admission (before 5 PM) and the Thursday "NightLife" adult ticket. The NightLife event is strictly for ages 21 and over—a perfect chance to experience a completely kid-free, adults-only museum vibe! Ticket prices have gone up a bit recently, so we recommend checking the official website for the latest rates.

Right by the ticket queue, you'll see signs advertising attraction passes, which are often a much cheaper alternative to buying individual tickets! In San Francisco, there are two main pass providers: Go City and City Pass. The difference is that Go City lets you choose 2 to 5 attractions, while City Pass includes a set of 4 attractions. You can pick whichever suits your itinerary best! If you plan to visit more than two paid attractions in San Francisco, we highly recommend looking into these passes. (We personally bought a 2-attraction Go City pass to visit the Exploratorium and the California Academy of Sciences, instantly saving ourselves over a dozen bucks!)

After purchasing your pass, you'll receive a confirmation email from Klook with your pass number. Simply download the Go City app, enter the number, and you can easily check all the eligible San Francisco attractions on your phone. When you're ready to use it, just head to the ticket counter, show them the barcode to scan, and they'll print out an official physical ticket for you, just like the one in the photo above!

As soon as we walked into the California Academy of Sciences, we were greeted by a massive T-Rex skeleton! So far, it felt exactly like the classic museum experience you'd expect.

The maps and brochures are available in four different languages, and Traditional Chinese is one of them, which felt incredibly welcoming! While not every single exhibit description inside has a Chinese translation, a good number of them do! Keep an eye out for them as you explore.

The map clearly highlights the different zones. The first floor houses the planetarium, the African animal area, and the rainforest conservatory, while the aquarium is located in the basement. It's a great idea to check out the scheduled activities for each area first so you can plan a smooth route!

Since the planetarium requires an online reservation to enter, we highly recommend taking a left toward it immediately after you walk in!

There are signs at the planetarium entrance telling you to scan the QR code to book your visit online—it's first come, first served! Sadly for us, there's a strict rule that children under four aren't allowed inside. Since we had a lively three-year-old with us, we unfortunately had to skip this experience.

However, there are some vibrant tropical fish displayed around the perimeter of the planetarium. You can also look straight down from the main floor to see the beautiful coral reefs and fish in the basement aquarium!

The African animal hall features a gorgeous, long arched corridor!

Inside, you'll find a massive collection of African animal taxidermy—they look incredibly lifelike.

There's even a tree that "grows" right out of its display case! A leopard is perched on the branches, perfectly paired with the painted African savanna and other animals in the background. It's such a creative setup!

At the very end of this exhibition area is the only living animal in the African hall 👉🏻 penguins! At first glance, it felt a bit odd—shouldn't penguins be in the aquarium?! We soon learned that these African penguins (also known as jackass penguins) are totally different from the ones living in the freezing Antarctic. They actually naturally inhabit the warm coasts of Africa!

The penguin exhibit posts daily feeding times. On the day of our visit, feedings were at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM. If you want to watch these little guys devour their meals, make sure you don't miss it!

The "Color of Life" exhibit introduces a stunning array of animals, plants, and insects across the color spectrum!

There are also plenty of fun interactive exhibits to play around with!

You'll spot some fascinating little insects as well! Take this one with its mind-blowing camouflage—if you don't look closely, you'd never know it's a bug. It looks exactly like a leaf!

Keep walking, and you'll run into a giant, transparent dome—the rainforest conservatory! The temperature inside is quite high and humid. If you visit in the winter, remember to dress in layers so you don't end up sweating buckets!

Inside, it's packed with unique rainforest animals, plants, and insects. Cherry's personal favorite was just wandering around this area; there are so many unfamiliar species that it truly broadens your horizons!

Countless butterflies flutter freely throughout the dome. Some even land on fruit slices provided by the staff, allowing visitors to observe them beautifully up close!

There are also brilliant sapphire-blue butterflies that immediately catch the eye! Cherry actually remembers seeing wild blue butterflies similar to these in Cairns, Australia. We wonder if they're the same species!

At the end of the conservatory path, you can take an elevator straight down to the basement aquarium. The walls next to the elevator are covered in lush climbing plants—major rainforest vibes! Look up, and you'll see round "bubble skylights." Each one is equipped with automated sensors that open and close them to regulate natural light and ventilation, significantly reducing the building's reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning!

The basement aquarium might not be massive, but it is incredibly engaging. There are so many marine creatures we had never seen before—it's absolutely stunning! Honestly, it feels way more worthwhile than many standalone smaller aquariums.

The most memorable part for us was the bioluminescent marine life. Seeing these underwater creatures emitting a glow that looks almost unreal gave us a profound appreciation for the magic of nature!

There's also a dedicated section highlighting the California coast!

The aquarium hosts interactive Q&A sessions while divers are right in the tanks feeding the fish! When we went, it was packed, mostly with energetic kids on school field trips.

Of course, the classic coral reefs and colorful tropical fish are a must-see, too!

Our son had the absolute best time watching them!

Before heading back up to the first floor, don't forget to swing by the swamp area. That's an alligator in the photo! Thanks to the glass viewing window, you can actually see what the alligator looks like lurking underwater!

Since it is the "California Academy of Sciences," it's naturally essential to introduce the local environment. This section showcases California's native marine life, terrestrial plants, and animals.

Additionally, there's a highly popular earthquake simulator in this area! The massive 1906 earthquake severely damaged San Francisco, and many of the famous landmarks we see today survived that catastrophic event. That said, if you already live in an earthquake zone, you probably don't need a simulator to know how terrifying a strong quake can be!

Finally, right before leaving, make sure you head to the top floor to check out 👀 the "breathing" Living Roof! The Living Roof is planted with over a million native plants and looks just like a rolling green hillside. But it's not just for looks—it serves many crucial functions! The plants keep the building cool, reducing the need for air conditioning. During rainy weather, they absorb stormwater to prevent flooding. Plus, this massive green space attracts butterflies, bees, and birds to nest, creating a vibrant natural habitat right in the middle of the city. This isn't just a roof; it's a living, breathing green oasis that helps our planet!

From the Living Roof, you can also enjoy sweeping views of Golden Gate Park. It must be absolutely spectacular on a bright, sunny day!

To sum it up, the California Academy of Sciences is a fantastic spot where you can easily spend an entire day. The aquarium alone is remarkably impressive, filled with bizarre and wonderful marine creatures we had never seen before! Throw in the planetarium, the rainforest dome, and the chance to dive deep into California's native ecosystems, and it really is an incredibly high-value, educational, and fun destination. We wholeheartedly recommend it to families traveling with kids! If you're deciding between just an aquarium or this, definitely choose the California Academy of Sciences!
