★ US Visa

Before packing your bags and jetting off to Vegas, the absolute most important step (besides flights and hotels) is sorting out your US visa. Depending on your passport and the purpose of your trip, you'll generally fall into one of two categories: the ESTA Visa Waiver Program or the B1/B2 Tourist/Business Visa. If you hold a passport from Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, or any of the 40+ participating countries (check the official site for eligibility) and plan to stay for less than 90 days, applying for an ESTA is all you need!

☆ ESTA Visa Waiver Program

◆ Eligibility: For tourism or business purposes, staying no longer than 90 days.
◆ Cost: $40.27 USD (2026 updated price).
◆ Validity: Two years (allowing multiple entries within those two years; requires reapplication if you get a new passport).
◆ Application Timeline: We highly recommend applying online at least 72 hours before departure. Please make sure to use the Official ESTA Website to avoid being overcharged by third-party agents. ‼️WARNING‼️ There are many fake websites online that mimic the official site and charge upwards of $80-$100 USD. Always verify the URL ends in .gov!

☆ B1/B2 Tourist/Business Visa

If your passport isn't eligible for an ESTA, you plan to stay longer than 90 days, or you've visited certain countries during specific timeframes, you must apply for a B1/B2 visa.
📍 Visited Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen on or after March 1, 2011.
📍 Visited Cuba on or after January 12, 2021.

For our Taiwanese friends as an example, applying for a B1/B2 visa means scheduling an in-person interview at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
◆ Cost: $185 USD.
◆ Validity: Typically 5 years, allowing multiple entries.
◆ Stay Duration: Up to 180 days (determined by customs at entry).
◆ Process: Fill out the DS-160 Form → Pay the fee → Schedule an interview (make sure to bring your DS-160 confirmation page).

☆ Pre-Trip Checklist

◆ Passport Validity: Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date from the US.
◆ Return Ticket: Customs may ask to see proof of your return or onward flight.
◆ Accommodation Address: You'll need the exact address of your Vegas hotel for both your ESTA application and your customs declaration upon entry.

★ Time Difference

Las Vegas observes Daylight Saving Time, meaning the time difference with Asia (like Taiwan) shifts depending on the season. For example, if it's 12:00 PM (noon) in Taiwan, it will be 9:00 PM the previous day in Vegas during the summer, and 8:00 PM the previous day during the winter.

SeasonTime Difference
March to October15 hours behind Taiwan
November to February16 hours behind Taiwan

★ Voltage

The voltage in Las Vegas is 110V-120V with a frequency of 60Hz. This is practically identical to Taiwan's 110V, and the plug sockets are standard US Type A (two flat pins) or Type B (three pins). Most electronics from Taiwan and North America can be plugged in directly without needing a voltage converter or adapter.

★ Is Las Vegas Safe? Areas to Avoid

The Las Vegas Strip is generally very safe! It’s packed with people, heavily patrolled by police, and covered in security cameras. Most issues tourists face are petty crimes that can be easily prevented—like pickpockets or street scams—rather than violent incidents.

A golden rule on the Strip: do not accept "free" CDs, bracelets, or promotional items from strangers. This is a classic aggressive sales tactic, and they will demand money once it's in your hand. The real caution comes when you stray off the main tourist paths, walk through deserted areas, or wander late at night. Even on the Strip, keep your wits about you if you find yourself on a quiet stretch at 2 AM.

As for Downtown Las Vegas (Fremont Street), it's best to visit during the day or stick strictly to the main, well-lit tourist canopy at night. Wandering outside the main Downtown zone gets sketchy very quickly. Overall, Las Vegas is a "regionally safe" city for tourists—stick to the Strip and large hotel resorts and you'll be fine! Here are our top safety tips for travelers:

🚕 Avoid dark alleys at night; stick to the bustling main streets. If you need to travel a distance, grab an Uber/Lyft rather than forcing a walk.
🎒 Wear your backpack in front in dense crowds, and don't walk while glued to your phone screen.
💳 Don't keep all your cash in one place.
🙅‍♂️ Ignore street hustlers offering "free shows," handing out CDs, or aggressively demanding tips for photos.
🏨 Staying at a hotel right on the Strip offers the best peace of mind.

★ Best Months to Visit Las Vegas

Located right in the middle of the Nevada desert, Las Vegas experiences extreme weather. Choosing the right month to visit can be the difference between a "comfortable, amazing trip" and "sweating buckets to the point of heatstroke."

MonthTemperatureBest For
March–MayHighs usually below 32°C (90°F)Perfect weather for exploring the city and doing day trips to the Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon.
September–NovemberSep highs below 34°C (93°F); Oct-Nov below 30°C (86°F)Excellent time for sightseeing and day trips to the Grand Canyon and Antelope Canyon.
January–FebruaryDays 10°C-19°C (50-66°F); Nights drop to 5°C (41°F)Best for budget travelers! Aside from New Year's, this is the off-season. Hotel rates can be 1/3 of the peak season prices.
June–AugustSearing highs of 40°C-45°C (104-113°F)Strictly indoor activities: casinos, shows, shopping, or relaxing in hotel pools. Not recommended for outdoor excursions.

Pro Tip: Beyond just the weather, pay close attention to the city's event calendar! Las Vegas frequently hosts massive conventions, festivals, and sporting events. Always check hotel prices before booking your flights. Like the stock market, Vegas hotel rates fluctuate wildly depending on what events are in town, sometimes jumping by multiple times their normal rate!

★ Tipping Culture in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a tourist mecca built entirely on entertainment and hospitality, meaning tipping here is more frequent and expected than almost anywhere else. From the casino floor to restaurants, hotels to taxis, tipping isn't just about politeness—it's the fast track to getting excellent service.

For instance, when you're sitting at a gaming table or slot machine, alcoholic drinks are usually free (compliments of the house). However, it's highly expected to tip the cocktail waitress $1-$2 per drink. If you don't tip, that next drink might take a very long time to arrive, or the server might conveniently "forget" to come back your way. Here is our quick cheat sheet for tipping in Vegas:

SituationSuggested Tip
Casino DealersIt's customary to tip a little if you hit a big win.
Casino Cocktail Servers$1-$2 per drink.
Street Performers/PhotosNegotiate the tip before taking the photo to avoid being overcharged.
Buffets$2-$5 per person (or 10% of the total bill) left on the table.
Dine-in Lunch15%-18% of the pre-tax total.
Dine-in Dinner18%-22% of the pre-tax total.
TakeoutNo tip required, or $1-$2 as a gesture of appreciation.
Taxi / Uber / Lyft15%-20% of the fare.
Hotel Bellhops$2-$5 depending on the number of bags they bring to your room.
Housekeeping$2-$5 left on the nightstand daily.
Valet Parking$5 when you retrieve your car.

A few extra tips on tipping: Tips are traditionally calculated on the "pre-tax" amount. However, modern credit card machines often automatically calculate the suggested percentages based on the "post-tax" total. You are free to manually adjust this. When tipping in cash, always use bills ($1 or $5 bills); tipping in coins is considered rude.

Lastly, always double-check your receipt! Many restaurants in heavily touristy areas, or those seating parties of 6 or more, will automatically add an 18%-20% gratuity to the bill. If you see "Service Charge" or "Tip Included" on your receipt, you do not need to add an extra tip!

★ Is Tap Water Safe to Drink in Las Vegas?

We strongly advise against drinking water straight from the tap in Las Vegas. To ensure the safety of water transported across long distances in the desert, Las Vegas water is treated with higher-than-average levels of chlorine. This gives the tap water a very distinct, "swimming pool-like" smell and taste.

However, buying single bottles of water from shops or vending machines on the Strip will easily set you back $4-$6 a pop! Our best advice? On your first day, swing by a nearby supermarket/pharmacy off the main drag and buy large gallon jugs or an entire case of water for your hotel room. It's by far the most cost-effective way to stay hydrated in the desert.

★ Top 30 Las Vegas Attractions

Crowned the "Entertainment Capital of the World," Las Vegas welcomes over 30 million visitors a year, meaning there is absolutely no shortage of things to see and do. True to its "Sin City" reputation, the nightlife is dazzling and completely unrivaled. Just wandering down the Strip alone gives you endless stunning hotels and free sights to enjoy—not to mention the world-class paid experiences like acrobatics, magic shows, observation wheels, and towering decks.

Below, we've broken down our absolute favorite Vegas attractions into three main areas: "The Strip," "Downtown," and "Day Trips," to help you easily build your itinerary!

☆ The Strip Attractions

The hotels on the Las Vegas Strip are constantly competing to outshine one another. Many of them are incredible attractions in their own right just based on their architecture and lobby design! From the romantic canals of Venice to the bustling streets of New York, and the ancient pyramids of Egypt, walking the Strip feels like traveling the world in a single day. Best of all, these resorts host an array of free shows, art exhibits, and fountain spectacles.

Here is our comprehensive list of the best spots on the Strip (both free and paid), ordered from North to South. If you're traveling on a budget, be sure to check out our dedicated guide: 👉🏻 17 Free Vegas Shows & Attractions.

21. Buffets

Sources: Wynn Las Vegas Website

Feasting at a massive buffet is a time-honored Vegas tradition! After Cherry spent hours digging through reviews, watching videos from American creators, and researching all the major players (as of 2024 data), we've managed to crown the absolute top three buffets to save you the hassle!

1. Bacchanal BuffetCaesars Palace / MapBook Here
2. The Buffet at Wynn Las VegasWynn / MapBook Here
3. Wicked SpoonThe Cosmopolitan / MapBook Here

Ultimately, Cherry's inner girly-girl completely swooned over the stunning floral decor, so we opted for The Buffet at Wynn. To be completely honest, for the price point, North American buffets still don't quite match up to the variety and delicacy of buffets back in Asia (though maybe we just prefer Asian flavors!). But as far as North American buffets go, Vegas offers the absolute best of the best, so you should definitely experience it at least once while you're here!

You can't come all the way to America and not hit the outlet malls! Las Vegas has two massive ones: North and South. The Las Vegas North Premium Outlets is located near Downtown (Map Link | Store Directory).

The other, "Las Vegas South Premium Outlets," is located just about an 8-minute drive south of the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign (Map Link | Store Directory). Deciding which one to visit really just comes down to which brands you're hunting for and which one is closer to your hotel!

☆ Day Trips & Surrounding Attractions

If you have the time, trading the neon lights for the spectacular natural wonders surrounding Las Vegas is highly recommended!

1. Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is not just a world-famous attraction; it is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World! Carved out over millions of years by the Colorado River, the sheer scale of it—stretching 454 kilometers long, up to 25 kilometers wide, and dropping 1,500 meters deep—defies words. The shifting colors of the ancient rock layers and the winding river below will leave you completely awestruck by nature's masterpiece. While hiking (like the immensely popular South Rim Trail, which draws 4 million visitors a year) is a fantastic way to explore…

…taking a Helicopter Tour is arguably an even more epic experience. Soaring over the rims and diving into the gorge offers an unforgettable perspective of this mammoth landscape!

2. Antelope Canyon

★ Tours: Grand Canyon + Antelope Canyon + Horseshoe Bend

About a 4.5-hour drive from Vegas, Antelope Canyon is a mesmerizing slot canyon defined by its smooth, flowing, wave-like sandstone walls. When sunlight pierces through the narrow cracks at the top, the dancing light beams make the entire canyon glow like magic—it’s so beautiful it almost looks fake! The canyon is divided into three sections: Upper Antelope Canyon, Lower Antelope Canyon, and the lesser-known Antelope Canyon X. Here's a quick breakdown to help you choose:

DifferenceUpper AntelopeLower AntelopeAntelope Canyon X
RestrictionsAges 6+Requires climbing stairs/ladders; narrow and not for mobility-impairedSome stairs involved
ProsFamous for the dramatic midday light beamsMore varied terrain; feels like an adventureCheaper, far fewer crowds, still has light beams
ConsVery expensive and heavily crowdedNot suitable for elderly or very young kidsShorter canyon; views slightly less dramatic than Upper/Lower

To sum it up: Upper Antelope is world-famous for its majestic light beams, but you'll need to go between mid-April and September, specifically from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM, to see them at their peak. It requires booking way in advance. If you're visiting outside of those months, Lower Antelope offers much better value for money, though you'll need to be fit enough to handle steep, narrow stairs. Both Upper and Lower get incredibly crowded. If you want a more relaxed pace without shoulder-to-shoulder tourists, Canyon X is your best bet!

3. Horseshoe Bend

Located near Page, Arizona, Horseshoe Bend is a dramatic 270-degree curve in the Colorado River that takes the exact shape of a horseshoe (Ω). Since it's located right near Antelope Canyon, the two are almost always paired together on day trips!

4. Seven Magic Mountains

★ Tours: Seven Magic Mountains, Hoover Dam & Grand Canyon West Rim Tour

Just a quick 30-minute drive into the desert south of Las Vegas, "Seven Magic Mountains" is a striking, large-scale art installation created by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. Completed in 2016, it features seven towering columns of neon-painted boulders stacked over 30 feet high. Originally meant to be a temporary exhibit exploring the relationship between nature and artificial elements, it became such an insanely popular photo spot that they kept it as a permanent attraction! If you've got a free morning, it's highly recommended to go witness this pop of color against the barren desert landscape!

5. Hoover Dam

Also roughly 30 minutes from the city, the Hoover Dam is a fantastic stop to tack on if you're driving out toward the Grand Canyon. As one of the largest concrete dams in the world, standing atop it and looking down at the Colorado River far below gives you a profound appreciation for both human engineering and nature's raw power. Because of its proximity to Vegas, it makes for a super easy half-day trip, and many Grand Canyon tour packages include a stop here!

★ Transport Guide

Las Vegas offers a variety of ways to get around. Different transport methods are better suited for different areas, and each has its pros and cons:

Hop-On Hop-Off BusThe Strip + DowntownLess crowded / English commentaryExpensive + gets stuck in trafficOfficial Site / Klook

Uber / LyftAnywhereDirect to your destinationA single short trip can easily cost $20+-
Rental CarAnywhereGreat for exploring day trips at your own paceNightmarish traffic on the Strip / parking feesRental Info

To sum it up: if you want to save money, take advantage of the Free Trams for the southern half of the Strip (south of Bellagio). For anything north of Bellagio, use your feet or hop on the budget-friendly Deuce Bus. If you're heading Downtown, ride the Deuce Bus to The STRAT and hop on the Free Downtown Loop—it drops you right at the attractions, and riding with fellow tourists feels safer. If you're short on time and want a guided overview, the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus is great.

Unless you plan to drive out to the Grand Canyon or other day trips, we highly advise against renting a car if you're just staying in the city. The Strip gets so congested that walking is often faster! For a deep dive into navigating Vegas, check out our full 👉🏼 Vegas Transport Guide.

When planning out a Vegas itinerary, people constantly ask us: how many days do we actually need? For a nicely paced trip, we highly recommend splitting the Strip in half using the Bellagio as your centerpoint. Dedicate one day to exploring the South Strip and one day for the North Strip. If you want to experience the vintage vibes of Downtown, add a third day. Finally, factor in extra days based on how much you want to hit the outlet malls or tackle those epic day trips! We hope our ultimate Las Vegas guide helps make your trip spectacular!
