Perched right on the southwestern tip of Bali, Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is blessed with a spectacular cliffside coastline. Because it faces west, the golden glow of the setting sun spills across the endless ocean, weaving together with the ancient cliff temple to create a breathtakingly beautiful scene straight out of a classic painting. It is honestly just drop-dead gorgeous!

The traditional Indonesian Kecak Fire Dance, performed by dozens of chanters in the glow of the sunset, makes the experience even more magical and has brought this place massive fame! Today, Uluwatu Temple is easily the number one must-visit attraction in southern Bali!

★ Ticket Prices: Adults IDR 50,000 | Children IDR 30,000

★ Transport: Driving yourself or booking a private car charter
By the time the Kecak dance finishes, it’s completely dark outside. If you haven't figured out your transportation back, it can get incredibly stressful! Since Uluwatu Temple is quite remote, we highly recommend either driving yourself or booking a private car charter for peace of mind!

You'll need to buy a ticket to enter the Uluwatu Temple grounds. What really surprised us is that they actually offer free Wi-Fi here! If you need it, the username and password are pasted right on the ticket window. We didn’t actually use it though, so we can't vouch for the speed!
It’s particularly worth noting that right next to the ticket counter, there’s a massive warning sign written in 11 different languages: "Please remove glasses, jewelry, hats. Beware of monkeys." Clearly, a lot of unsuspecting tourists have been ambushed here! Before our trip, Cherry had already read about some of the tragic experiences from other travelers online, so we came fully prepared. Make sure you stay vigilant when you visit!
Since this is a sacred temple, after buying your ticket and before heading in, the temple provides free sarongs and sashes that you can borrow to cover up properly.

The sarongs provided by this temple are purple, paired with bright orange sashes.
Built in the 10th century, Uluwatu Temple is a true ancient sanctuary with over a thousand years of history. Its architecture is incredibly representative of classic Balinese temple design.
The ancient temple sits upon a sheer 70-meter-high cliff, which is how it earned the nickname "Cliff Temple." This towering precipice is actually the setting for two tragic, age-old love stories. The first tells of a deeply in love couple whose families forbade their marriage due to differing social statuses. In the end, they decided to embrace and throw themselves off the cliff into the sea. The second is about a wife who waited in vain for her husband to return from the sea, eventually leaping into the ocean in despair. This is why the cliff is sometimes referred to as "Lover's Cliff" or "Waiting Wife Cliff," adding a profound layer of myth and romance to the area.
We followed the path toward Uluwatu Temple and eventually arrived at the entrance to the inner sanctuary. However, the heavy doors were tightly locked—it turns out tourists aren't allowed inside.
Even though we couldn't enter the main temple, the view of the back hills from the plaza by the entrance is very popular with visitors. During the season we went, the valley was entirely covered in trees blooming with stunning orange flowers. It was spectacular!
Tucked among the trees, there is a mysterious, unnamed statue.
It was also in this plaza that we finally got a close-up look at the legendary monkeys! Honestly, we aren't sure why, but we really didn't see that many of them. From start to finish, we probably only spotted about four or five scattered around. All the tourists seemed terrified of getting robbed, so everyone was keeping a very safe distance! 😆
On the other side of the temple stretches a rugged cliff face standing tall against the vast ocean. Down below the near-vertical drops, massive waves endlessly crash against the rock face, churning up enormous white seafoam. Backed by the endless expanse of the Indian Ocean, this raw, natural landscape is utterly mesmerizing!
The famous traditional Indonesian Kecak Fire Dance is held in a spectacular circular amphitheater perched right on the cliff edge.

The Kecak dance performance times are: one show at 6:00 PM during the low season, and two shows nightly at 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM during peak season. The on-site ticket price is IDR 100,000 per person (as of Nov 2019). According to our local driver, the Kecak dance is most beautiful when viewed against the sunset. If you're visiting in peak season and have the choice between the 6 PM or 7 PM show, we definitely recommend checking the sunset time before deciding which one to book! If you want to catch the 6 PM show, it's best to arrive at the temple before 5 PM (low season timing) to line up for tickets, because once they sell out, that's it! You can also book online in advance via Klook to skip the queue and guarantee a seat. Keep in mind that the Uluwatu Temple entrance fee and the Kecak dance ticket are completely separate. So, even if you’ve pre-purchased your dance ticket, you still need to buy a temple entrance ticket at the main gate!

The panoramic view looking out from inside the amphitheater is seriously gorgeous!
The venue gets absolutely packed!! If you're going to watch, definitely get there early to claim a good spot. If you show up too late, you might end up sitting on the floor!

We chose a sweet spot where we could watch the show and see the temple in the background.

Right before the performance begins, someone comes out to light the bonfire in the center of the stage.

Once the show starts, dozens of men encircle the fire. From the opening act to the finale, there are absolutely no musical instruments used. Instead, the performers provide a continuous, rhythmic "chak-a-chak" vocal chant that drives the story forward. It is profoundly captivating.

The Kecak dance depicts an epic tale from Hindu mythology. They provide an English synopsis at the venue for tourists to read. We highly recommend familiarizing yourself with the plot before the show starts—it makes the whole performance so much more engaging!

An ancient cliff temple, the endless ocean, a breathtaking sunset, and the mesmerizing Kecak dance all in one frame… it's no wonder the Uluwatu Kecak performance is world-famous!

As night falls, the grand finale features an intense fire dance that leaves the whole audience in absolute awe!

The scenery at Uluwatu Temple and the Kecak dance truly live up to the hype. The awe-inspiring, majestic cliffs carved by nature, the historically rich traditional temple, and the cultural performance set against an unbeatable ocean sunset—all of these elements blend together into an incredibly magical experience. We couldn't recommend adding this to your Bali itinerary enough!
