1. Helsinki Cathedral
★ Location: Unioninkatu 29, 00170 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Please check the official website
★ Tickets: Free admission

Along with Uspenski Cathedral and Temppeliaukio Rock Church, Helsinki Cathedral is one of the three major churches in the city. Completed in 1852, it's actually the oldest of the three! Commonly known as the "White Church," it features a towering green central dome surrounded by four smaller domes, creating a striking contrast against its pristine white facade. Its elegant design makes it Helsinki's most famous and iconic landmark! 📌 Recommended Reading: Helsinki Cathedral
Not only is Helsinki Cathedral architecturally unique with its eye-catching green domes, but its interior is also incredibly elegant.

Visiting around Christmas makes it even more magical, with festive decorations adding an indescribable, elegant beauty!

2. The Harbour
★ Location: Pohjoisranta 1, 00170 Helsinki | Map Link
While walking from Helsinki Cathedral to Uspenski Cathedral, you'll pass by a lovely harbour area. You might spot an incredibly eye-catching red ship docked at the shore—it's actually a cafe called Relandersgrund Cafe! We didn't try the food there, but the bright red vessel standing out on the water is absolutely striking. We also passed by a restaurant called Ravintola Nokka, which features a giant propeller and anchor outside. It's so unique! The whole row of European-style buildings along the coast feels incredibly romantic.

The bridge leading to Uspenski Cathedral is covered in padlocks 🔒. We later checked Google Maps and found out it's literally called "Love Bridge"—no wonder it's filled to the brim with love locks!

3. Uspenski Cathedral
★ Location: Pormestarinrinne 1, 00160 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Tue-Fri 9:30am-4pm | Sat 10am-3pm | Sun 12pm-3pm | Closed Mondays
★ Tickets: Free admission

Perched on the hillside of the Katajanokka peninsula, Uspenski Cathedral is also known as the "Red Church." Compared to the solemn elegance of Helsinki Cathedral, Uspenski's interior is significantly more lavish. The altar is set against an entire wall of tempera icons depicting Jesus and the Twelve Apostles. The inside exudes a strong Russian vibe (Finland was under Russian rule for over a century before gaining independence in 1917). The high vaulted ceiling above the altar is covered in exquisite paintings, paired with an absolutely massive, gleaming crystal chandelier in the center. It's like a Western version of ornate carved beams and painted rafters—elaborate and gorgeous, yet deeply solemn and unforgettable.

4. SkyWheel Helsinki
★ Location: Katajanokanlaituri 2, 00160 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 12pm-6pm | Sat 11am-7pm | Sun 11am-5pm
★ Tickets: Official Website | Klook

Looking down from Uspenski Cathedral, you can spot the SkyWheel Helsinki right away! Taking a ride on this Ferris wheel lets you enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Helsinki from 40 meters up in the air, including its famous churches, the bustling port, and surrounding islands. It's one of the best ways to get a bird's-eye view of the city, especially on a clear day when visibility stretches for miles. In the summer, the sun-drenched sea sparkles brilliantly, while in winter, the frozen ocean offers its own unique, icy charm. Taking in the sights from above is another fantastic way to discover Helsinki's urban beauty!
5. Market Square
★ Location: Eteläranta, 00170 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 6:30am-6pm | Sat 6:30am-4pm | Sun 6:30am-6pm

Helsinki's Market Square is located right next to the SkyWheel. The square hosts a vibrant outdoor market made up of colorful little stalls. It's a fantastic spot for picking up some souvenirs!

Besides souvenirs, there are plenty of food stalls too! Because the weather can get quite chilly, the vendors have thoughtfully set up tents so customers can dine warmly inside.

In the center of the Market Square stands Helsinki's oldest monument, the Czarina's Stone. It features a golden double-headed eagle perched on a golden globe. It was erected in 1835 during the Russian era to commemorate the first visit of the Tsar and Tsarina to Finnish soil. The eagle and globe were actually torn down when Finland declared independence in 1917, but they were later restored.

By the way, if you're planning to visit Suomenlinna (the island where the Sea Fortress is located), you can buy tickets and hop on a ferry right at the port next to Market Square! Since we only had a single day, we decided to skip Suomenlinna this time to focus on the more concentrated city center attractions. Otherwise, we heard that taking the ferry to Suomenlinna in the winter feels just like riding a super cost-effective "icebreaker" ship! (It's actually just a regular ferry ⛴️, but the sea is filled with crushed ice!)
📌 You might also want to check out the Helsinki Sightseeing Cruise departing from Market Square! It's a great way to admire Helsinki's cityscapes and the Suomenlinna sea fortress from the water. During the ride, you can even relax with snacks and refreshing drinks at the rooftop bar on board!

6. Old Market Hall
★ Location: Eteläranta, 00130 Helsinki, | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Mon-Tue 8am-6pm | Wed-Sun 8am-10pm

With over a century of history, the Old Market Hall sits right next to Helsinki's Market Square. Built in 1889, the main entrance even features a little gold-rimmed plaque bearing the year. Inside, it's a far cry from what you might imagine a "traditional old market" to be—it's incredibly neat and clean! Combined with all the unique little shops alongside it, if no one told us, we would have thought we'd stepped into a trendy creative arts district! 😆

The Old Market Hall is packed with stalls selling Finland's famous salmon, with some even offering freshly prepared salmon dishes right on the spot! We specifically came here to try the seafood soup from Soppakeittio Tapaste oy, which was famously featured on a Taiwanese travel show (👇🏻 bottom right of the photo below). It was delicious! If you're on a day trip, we highly recommend grabbing lunch at either Market Square or the Old Market Hall before continuing your afternoon itinerary!

7. Esplanadi Park
★ Location: Pohjoisesplanadi, 00130 Helsinki | Map Link

Located right in the heart of Helsinki and open to the public for over two centuries, Esplanadi Park is lined with beautiful trees and flanked by a row of stunning European-style buildings. It's quite romantic and definitely worth a stroll. Inside the park sits a classically designed restaurant called Kappeli. The front desk staff at our hotel, Klaus K, highly recommended it to us. Just looking at its exterior, it screams classical luxury! We heard it's also a highly popular spot among the Finnish locals!

8. Moomin Shop
★ Esplanadi Park Branch: Pohjoisesplanadi 2, 00130 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Lasipalatsi Branch: Mannerheimintie 22-24, 00100 Helsinki | Map Link

The most famous cartoon character in Finland is undoubtedly "Moomin"! If you love Moomins, you absolutely cannot miss the Moomin Shop! They offer a massive range of merchandise, from plush toys, picture books, and tableware to home decor, clothing, and bags. It's perfect not only for Moomin fans but also for picking up adorable souvenirs. Currently, there are two branches in downtown Helsinki: one near Esplanadi Park and another near the Kamppi Chapel. Both stores are super cute and conveniently located along standard sightseeing routes. If you happen to walk by, definitely pop in for a quick pilgrimage! And if you still haven't shopped enough, there's another branch at the airport too!
9. Temppeliaukio Rock Church
★ Location: Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 13, 00100 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Tue-Thu 10am-5pm | Sat 10am-6pm | Sun 10am-4pm | Closed Mon & Fri
★ Tickets: | Official Website
As one of Helsinki's top three churches alongside Helsinki Cathedral and Uspenski Cathedral, Temppeliaukio Rock Church is an absolute must-visit. We highly recommend visiting while the sun is still out. It's about a 20-minute walk from Esplanadi Park and the Moomin Shop, but if you want to save your legs, taking public transit is a great idea!

Coming right after the Chapel of Silence, here's another church that completely subverts the traditional European church stereotype 👉🏻 the Rock Church (originally named Temppeliaukio Church). While it lacks the classical, ornate craftsmanship of most European cathedrals, the way this church was built into solid rock is nothing short of an architectural marvel. The Rock Church is the most modern of the three major churches, completed in 1969. During construction, a massive rock formation was kept intact on the outside while being hollowed out from within. A ring of skylights and a dome that almost looks like a UFO were then added on top. During the day, sunlight pours through the skylights, flooding the interior with natural light ☀️. The fact that the church's outer walls are made of raw rock gives the space incredible acoustics, making it an excellent venue for concerts and one of Helsinki's most famous tourist attractions!

10. Kamppi Chapel (Chapel of Silence)
★ Location: Simonkatu 7, 00100 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Mon 10am-8pm | Tue-Fri 10am-5pm | Closed Sat & Sun

Standing in the bustling, crowded Narinkkatori Square, this striking cylindrical building doesn't immediately strike you as a traditional European church. Believe it or not, this is the Kamppi Chapel—a design marvel that won an International Architecture Award in 2010 and was part of the "World Design Capital Helsinki 2012" program.

Originally named Kamppi Chapel, it's exactly what it sounds like: a chapel located in Helsinki's Kamppi district. However, its primary purpose was to provide a place of calm and silence right in the middle of one of Finland's busiest areas, allowing the public a moment to cool down and reflect in peace. Hence, it earned the lovely nickname, the Chapel of Silence!

The interior of the Chapel of Silence is much like its exterior—entirely made of wood with no superfluous decorations, exuding a pure Nordic minimalist vibe. Although simple, it feels incredibly heartwarming and soothing.
11. Helsinki Central Station
★ Location: Kaivokatu 1, 00100 Helsinki | Map Link

Named one of the most beautiful railway stations in the world by the BBC in 2013, Helsinki Central Station is an important city landmark that celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. The main entrance is flanked by two pairs of human statues holding spherical lamps—a very unique design! Even though we were in Finland, Cherry couldn't help but playfully think of Egypt every time she saw these statues! 😆 At night, the spheres in their hands actually light up, so they serve a very practical purpose too!

12. Stockmann Department Store
★ Location: Aleksanterinkatu 52, 00100 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 10am-8pm | Sat 10am-7pm | Sun 12pm-6pm

Located right in the city center, Stockmann Department Store was established in 1862, making it one of Finland's oldest department stores and a hugely popular shopping destination. Inside, you'll find a wide array of fashion brands. The area around the department store is also incredibly lively and includes a great supermarket. Before you leave Finland, if you want to do some shopping, stock up at the supermarket, or just experience the bustling Helsinki downtown vibe, this is the perfect area to wander around!
13. Seaside Sauna
★ Löyly Location: Hernesaarenranta 4, 00150 Helsinki | Map Link
★ Opening Hours: Mon-Thu 11am-11pm | Fri-Sat 11am-12am | Sun 11am-10pm

One thing you absolutely must experience in Finland is a traditional Finnish sauna. Saunas have a history of over 2,000 years in Finland and are at the very core of Finnish culture. We highly recommend Löyly Helsinki, a famous seaside sauna! You can book online in advance. It's only a 10-minute drive from the Central Station, and they stay open quite late. If your schedule allows, definitely squeeze this into your itinerary for a truly authentic experience!
These are our top recommended attractions and itinerary plans for a day trip to Helsinki. It might look like a lot, but because the sights are so wonderfully concentrated, it's totally achievable!
We managed to hit all the above spots in a single day, and even had time in the evening for a relaxed stroll around the city and some supermarket shopping. It was an incredibly fulfilling day! At the time, we didn't know about the seaside sauna, so we sadly missed out on Löyly! Fortunately, the hotel we stayed at near the airport had a private sauna right in our room, so we still got to experience a classic Finnish sweat session!

Situated in the snowy Nordic region, Helsinki doesn't seem to be the top winter vacation choice for many Western tourists. But when we were exploring the sights, we never felt that "overrun by tourists" vibe at all. Strolling through the uncrowded streets of Helsinki was incredibly comfortable! Even though we were just here for a layover day trip, we completely fell in love with this city. If your schedule permits, we'd highly recommend setting aside two full days for Helsinki.
